Wrong size carpet

The fitter has made a very basic error, he has cut the customers measure from the roll and not allowed anything for fitting.
1.9 LM should have had 10% added on for waste and fitting, very few walls are straight.
I would demand they fit a carpet that actually fits the wallsI do Contracts, all day every day.0 -

Yes I should have added extra cm onto the dimensions and measured in more than 1 place, but I did not realise , I have measured for carpet before in another room and didn't have this problem and it was not clearly explained to me that they are pre cutting the carpet to my exact size and hindsight is a wonderful thing, I would have got the shop to measure if I had known there was no leaway on the measure (not even a 1cm!!)
I have complained to the Manager and he is coming out to have a look on Saturday. The carpet fitter is not their usual choice apparently, and he has not tried to stretch the carpet the required 1 cm , which according to our man at the shop is perfectly possible. There is plenty of carpet left over from the length of the room, which is interesting as I was told it was cut to my exact measure to of room ( it says 1.9 m X 4m on receipt, room is only 2.8m long! ) I have rolled it out and it's the same width as fitted, it's not been stretched at all! He claims they only bring enough carpet to cover the measurement to keep the price down , no waste etc etc etc. So why have 1.2 metres left over??
We will see what happens when he comes out Sat
Thanks again
Did he turn your heating on/up when stretching it? No idea if this is a requirement just whenever I get a new bedroom carpet, it always needs stretched (big room) quite a bit and 3 different carpet fitters have always wanted the heating turned up to stretch it.
This video shows a method for doing it with just your feet - might be worth a shot given its just 1cm.

You DO NOT streach a carpet to make it bigger that is a fallacy, The point of streaching a carpet is to tighten it not to make it any bigger then it already is. With most carpets if you tried to "grow" it with a knee kicker 1 of 2 (or both) things would happen.
1, the kneekicker will warp and/or damage the carpet at the head point (the point where the head of the knee kicker is touching the carpet).
2, the carpet may grow by between 5-10mm (depending on the starting size of the carpet) but WILL eventually srink back the timeframe for this depends on the type of carpet but can be anything from a few hours to a few years.
If you ordered 1.9 x 4 and received 1.89 you have still got exactly what you purchaced. The Brittish Standard BS3655 states that all pre-cut carpet sizes have a tolarance of -/+1.25% meaning a carpet ordered at 1.9 could infact come in as small as 1.878 and still be concidered correct (however had the retailer not pointed out the tolarence (on your invoice or other sales material) you may have a claim there).
The reason the carpet was by 4 meters when you only needed 2.8 on the width was because 4m is a standard width where as length can be cut to whatever size you want (most shops work in decimeters though).
For a room that is 1.89X2.8 you really needed to order 2.0 X 4.0.
unholyangel The reason the fitter wanted the heating on was that it sofetens up the carpet making it easier to get it to the correct tightness so proventing the need to return to restreach after the carpet had acclimatized.
Hope this all helps, FYI Im a professional flooring specalist with 20 experence in both domestic and contract flooring0 -

Tbh I have no idea what exactly they did. Made them a cup of tea and left them to it. But they definitely did say it was to stretch it, as they explained it might have to be patched if it wouldn't stretch enough.
Unless thats just how you guys explain stuff like that to people like me who don't have a clue? You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
Personally I think the fitter was a bit of a FKwhit if he cut exactly 1.9 from a 4m roll and expected it to fit.
When he realised the error, he should have stopped and called the shop.
I would ask the shop if they are going to rectify it or have their reputation ruined.
Lets be honest, you would not use them again would you.
He should have cut 2m from the roll, 10% is the given figure for wastage and fitting margins.I do Contracts, all day every day.0 -
I agree Mark, that will my argument when he comes out to view. You are asking for trouble cutting a carpet to the exact size before you get to the property..0
