Wrong size carpet

For future reference, rooms are never 100% square-just ask a plasterer, carpenter or kitchen fitter. Always check at each end and give the larger size.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

But why wouldn't you measure few cm extra.
I don't think you have any rights here as it was measured by you.
And fitters will trim it as they along the job, so if they trimmed it before going in the room, they must have asked you the measurements.0 -
Unusual that you can buy carpet at 1.89m length, I've always had to buy to nearest metre or yard, so 2m length would have been a sensible amount to buy.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

Thats my point, the OP will almost certainly have paid for 2m, but received 1.89. This might give him room to manouvre. Precutting = not supplying what he paid for. The fact that he gave the wrong measurements was irrelevant at that point.0

are you really going to see a 1cm gap once you have all the baby gear in there? i would also of suggested you measure up the room then add on a couple of inches to compensate for these scenario's0

A family member of mine works in the carpet business and they tend to make small allowances for size when cutting carpets (mainly because it saves stress when customers misjudge it slightly and an extra slither of carpet is worthless). Unless you bought it at a specific size (rollends, ordering size x by y) in which case refer to marliepanda's post.
The problems tend to be when customers come in with their own sizes, declining the (sometimes free) measure service on offer. They sometimes mess it up big time and don't make their own allowances.
Best thing is to get a measure in the future and that way the company is liable if it doesn't fit! Oh and don't be cheeky and ask a small shop to do a free measure only to go to a rival (who charges measuring fees) to purchase the carpet. The sizes *may not* be correct  :rotfl:0 -
A competent carpet shop would know that a customer measures wall to wall and rarely in to doorways.
They normally add 10% to sizes as waste and where a mistake is evident the standard procedure is to not fit the carpet.
Are they members of the CFA, contract flooring association ?
You can ask them to adjudicate if they are and I think turning up with carpet cut down exactly to customers sizes when the customer is expecting a fitted carpet would come down to basic low level incompetence.I do Contracts, all day every day.0 -

Thanks for all your advice much appreciated
Yes I should have added extra cm onto the dimensions and measured in more than 1 place, but I did not realise , I have measured for carpet before in another room and didn't have this problem and it was not clearly explained to me that they are pre cutting the carpet to my exact size and hindsight is a wonderful thing, I would have got the shop to measure if I had known there was no leaway on the measure (not even a 1cm!!)
I have complained to the Manager and he is coming out to have a look on Saturday. The carpet fitter is not their usual choice apparently, and he has not tried to stretch the carpet the required 1 cm , which according to our man at the shop is perfectly possible. There is plenty of carpet left over from the length of the room, which is interesting as I was told it was cut to my exact measure to of room ( it says 1.9 m X 4m on receipt, room is only 2.8m long! ) I have rolled it out and it's the same width as fitted, it's not been stretched at all! He claims they only bring enough carpet to cover the measurement to keep the price down , no waste etc etc etc. So why have 1.2 metres left over??
We will see what happens when he comes out Sat
Thanks again0 -
You say the recipt says 1.9 x 4 metres and assuming that's what they charged you for, it means they've cut it short by giving you 189cm.
The reason a 4 metre length of carpet is the roll the carpet was bought from is 4 metres wide.0
