Wrong size carpet

Hi there

My first post on here so be gentle...

Would really appreciate any help on this matter, I'm hoping it can be resolved with the company but would like some advice first...
Am just finishing our nursery , we ordered new carpet a few weeks ago. It has been fitted today looks great apart from one small problem, there is a small gap on two sides between the carpet and skirting board! Not happy...

Ok, wrong measurements you presume, we measured the room with a metal measure accurately we thought. Ok the room is slightly wider by 1 cm one end, we didn't take this into consideration , we only measured one end. The room is not 100% square.

So you would have thought the carpet shop would allow a small amount of margin to allow for this? Er no, the carpet came 'pre cut' width wise he just trimmed the end. I always thought it was trimmed when fitting. Fitter highlighted the problem to my wife ( I was at work) he claimed it was measured wrong but said he should be able to stretch it to cover the small gap each side (about 1cm in total ) , wrong the carpet looks badly fitted and I am left scratching my head what to do?

Ok we measured the room, but I didn't realise they and nor was I advised that they were using this room guide as an exact measurement to Precut the carpet before fitting! Surely they have to allow extra for trimming?

I will ring them tomorrow of course but what are my rights if any for a replacement carpet the correct size?

Thanks again for any help

Dave

    You have absolutely zero rights.

    You ordered a carpet x by x.

    You got a carpet x by x.
  • Tack some beading to the skirting board to cover the gap. Next time you need some carpet get the fitter to measure it up before you place an order.
  • An expensive lesson learned , next time I will get the shop to measure up!

You say the fitter stretched the carpet - why does it now look badly fitted? You should easily get 1cm out of a carpet from stretching. Unless they were just shy of the measurement.
  • The carpet measures 1.89 metre one end of room and 1.90m at the other end, it looks badly fitted both ends, I don't think he attempted to stretch it much at all.

It's carpet for a nursery room, is there much point in taking this any further. Just use some beading as suggested.

Or if you have gripper strips, buy a carpet knee kicker tool (£20, I got one cheaper from Lidl) and stretch the carpet yourself. If its been stuck down, it wasn't well fitted.

Carpets often stretch over time, so if you can't manage to stretch it enough now, hopefully you will in a few months time.

Don't order from that shop again. If they precut carpets like this, knowing full well that rooms might not be square, they aren't a place I'd want to use. Particularly as you, presumably, paid for a section of a complete roll of carpet not just the dimensions you gave them (so there's some spare carpet somewhere that's yours). As far as I am aware, carpet shops round off measurements (when you are paying) to the nearest half metre.., so you are paying for carpet they have chopped off. That precut bit they might have discarded, as you are well aware contains your perfectly fitted carpet section. I'd question their policy of precutting carpets as theft, you might get somewhere but it'll be a lot of fuss.

I'd also be looking at the documents I got from the shop at the time of ordering, to see if they say they precut carpet.

Over estimate what carpet you need - just in case. Always fitted carpets myself, don't like paying someone else to do it.., I care how it looks, its just another job amongst the several they are doing that day.

Oh dear, I seem to be suffering from pedanticitis this morning lol.

You measured it wrong and (possibly by coincidence) it is the same amount short.
You can of course get a replacement carpet, so long as you pay for the replacement carpet.
