    Factory restore time... https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/migr-4vfudu
(backup data first; may also be a good idea to have previously created a backup DVD/CD set just in case the F11 recovery goes wrong. But it shouldn't.)

LENOVO Thinkpad 5400 and yes I believe the fan does run most of the time

The reason I ask is because if the fan ducts become blocked or partially blocked this will cause the processor to get hot and then it will compensate by slowing the processor down.

Try other's software suggestions first but do bear in mind this can be a less likely but possible cause.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

I have tried to copy and paste the info requested from Ccleaner but it was blocked by mse. I emailed them and they got back to me yesterday about 1700 and asked if they can help by posting it so I sent them the info by email. Clearly it hasn't been passed on yet :-(
Use a service like pastebin/dropbox/photobucket and post the link for that perhaps

Nothing obviously nasty or 2 AV running.
Q1. dropbox; has file synchronisation completed or is this constantly running? (put mouse over dropbox icon on bottom right and it should say whether it is synchronising or not).
Q2. filehippo. Don't know much about this but suggest you don't need this running in the background all the time.

If still an issue...post a picture of tasks running...
    1. close browsers, all programs;
    2. Ctrl+Shift+Esc
    3. Select Processes tab and ensure that show processes from all users is ticked (bottom left)
    4. Order processes on CPU; system idle process should be 100% most of the time
    5. Order processes on Memory;what is using most of memory
    Post pics of last 2.

best solution is post #12, but you could disable

ccleaner monitor, filehippo, dropbox, roadangel, adobearm, keepass & bluetooth
Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand

    Q1 No
Q2 This just checks for any updates on anything you have installed and running. Been using it for a few years recommended on her at some point filehippo.com

I will look at the other pointers when I get home. Thanks to all that have helped thus far ;-)

I would recommend the following :

Open CCLEANER, goto OPTIONS then MONITORING and turn of ALL monitoring

Then goto TOOLS and STARTUP (Within ccleaner still) and DISABLE everything except for the INK MONITOR and both AVG's (You can always enable anything you want to start up later once the machines 'fixed')

    Reboot

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
    UNTICK the trial when installing
Open malwarebytes. After its updated goto SCAN and click START SCAN

Whilst thats running go back to CCLEANER TOOLS UNINSTALL and save the text of all the programs installed on your machine and post here

Then look at the TOP of ccleaner and post the RAM (Mines 8.0GB RAM for example)

When MALWAREBYTES has finished, click SAVE RESULTS (Bottom right), select txt and post the txt here (Or dropbox again). remove anything malicious

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION') and install
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Whilst pressing the SHIFT key, RIGHT CLICK on the hijack desktop icon and select RUN AS (ADMINISTRATOR)
    Select MAIN MENU
Click DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE (Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
