wait until she goes out, clear the gutter and then deny any knowledge of it.
Presumably, you only have to clear the section from where your gutter ends/hers starts to where the downpipe goes down. Is that far?
  • If you have a windowcleaner in to do your windows - then is it physically possible for him to just move his ladder a couple of feet up the Council's pavement/your garden and take a quick grab at those weeds and pull them out in one minute flat?

If you manage to clean your own windows then...yep...you have my sympathies, as you couldn't use the windowcleaner for that if there wasn't one. Been there/done that when I had my starter terrace house and I paid an oddjob man what was actually a bargain rate he was asking for of £10 (as I recall) to clean out my gutters anyway. Mr Oddjob Man realised there was a similar problem with Next Doors gutter and spotted the man of the couple and asked him if he wanted to pay him literally just a few quid to sort things. Mr Next Door promptly lied and said he didn't live there:cool:. All I could do was tell Mr Oddjob that Mr Next Door was the sort of person who lies and he had just lied to him and I was stuck as to how to proceed - so I do know where you are coming from...

I was told about Lying Toad Mr Next Door after the event by my odd job man - ie when I was paying him at end of the day. However, you could tell a windowcleaner in advance what the neighbour was like and hand them some suitable implement (broom?) to shove the obstacle (weeds out of the way) or grab it and throw down into their garden.

Failing that - if I'd been planning on keeping that house - then I would have paid said oddjob man/window cleaner to insert a small metal barrier or the like JUST inside next doors gutter. Far enough away that it would block their gutter on THEIR side and the "waterfall" would come down the outside of their house, rather than mine.

Their problem = they suffer the damage.

When I do my gutters I also do those up hill to stop the garbage coming downhill and I do downhill until I reach the downspout.

    |My neighbours are not upset over this, in fact if they ever said anything it would likely be thank you - only it only takes 10 minutes so likely to quick for them to notice.

If you raised your gutters slightly would the water follow the incline down to their property and overflow where their blocked gutters are?
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!

Many thanks for all the replies....

I know I may seem a bit bloody minded on this, and quite frankly I can afford to get mine checked and hers cleaned while she's not there - nut as I said, no way I'm doing her any favours or anything that saves her any money.
She is just being obnoxious. Our gutters are clean, why should I pay for hers to be done. She's of the personality that she'd be laughing her butt off - getting her own way.

I'll write her one more letter asking politely and give a time limit of maybe 10 days.
Then, well I'm not sure. But, I need to find a way of forcing her to do it - teach a lesson so to speak.

As I said, we are not difficult people. In fact, in the past we have done her countless favours which have saved her time and expense. That's why we are standing fast on this. You get to the point where you've just had enough of someone.

Maybe 5m or so, but as above principle is starting to get in the way really.
I know many of you may not understand, but if you lived here, believe me you would have the same stance..

  • I used to have a neighbour like you

'can you cut your tree down because its pushing the wall over and it might suddenly crumble and damage my car'

Well the man he called around to survey it said there was no problem with it. but he still persisted.

'you've got a drip from the side of your house and it splashes into my garden'

'your fence panel has blown down can you fix it we feel unsafe'

yet when one of his fence panels blew down he waited and waited until the neigbour next to him fixed it.

Some neigbours, like me, don't give a toss about their nosey neighbours or blocked gutters.

You should not write poncy letters like some mug and go and knock the door and you could simply offer to clean it for her and be neighbourly instead of poncing around on forums whinging.

Why is it you don't like her? Or the road doesn't like her? Is it because she's not in the clan.

This is probably not meant to sound patronising, but in denying others alternative ways of behaving, it comes across like that.

People can understand taking a stance on a matter of principle, even to the extent of damaging their own self-interest.

However, they might decide it should be on something of major importance, not a small personal grudge matter like this.

When I bother to get up the ladder (which I don't like) and do the gutters I use a home made implement that comprises of a broom handle with a gutter profile shaped bit on metal on the end. Gives me a 6 foot reach along the gutter each way from the top of the ladder - so fewer ascends and descends.

Could you use something similar to clear her gutter from your side of the fence. At least then, the water would go down her wall and not yours ...

You can go and eff off. And's it's a bloody good job you're behind a keyboard and not saying that to my face!!
If you knew the situation you would understand, so climb off your high horse. Try reading through properly as well. I've lost count of the favours we've done for her over the years which have saved her a lot of money, but when you ask her to do one thing, she gets pig headed.
The neighbour you just described is a carbon copy of her - you have this the wrong way around!!!

Anyway, thanks to those who gave good advice and tried to understand....
