Can you get one of those that is safe to use indoors?

They are all reasonably safe to use indoors...in a well ventilated room. i.e don't use in a tiny cupboard sized area with no airflow. You've got to open the window just a little bit....and get yourself a CO detector. If flame burns nicely then it won't be emitting much CO.

They are just expensive to run. At around 20 pence per hour.

Doesn't everybody own a hob of some description? An electric hob can heat a whistling kettle too. You don't need a gas hob.

In a well ventilated location, it won't be emitting any CO.

Not during a power cut, which was the scenario being discussed.
