I think i agree with all the posters that suggested 50mls drive is something that can easily got round. But the same 50mls if neither of you drive starts to make it difficult.

And if the driver lives in a remote location and the non driver has to rely on public transport it can be a nightmare. I'm thinking if the people concerned are older yet would wish to support one another in case of illness/emergency or just for general support distance CAN be problematical.

Yes, of course. Good points from the two of you. :)

    Thanks Duchy.

I should learn to read posts thoroughly haha :o

50 miles away? That's not long distance!

So yes, this would be fine with me.

It depends what route you need to take!

39 miles to my MIL - 1 hour on back roads. Worst journey on the motorway was 3 1/2 hours.

Technically my commute was a mere 70 miles - but was on the M1 and M25, so absolutely impossible in rush hour, hence the mere 5 hour round trip rail/underground trek.

Which is rather limiting, given that you live in the middle of nowhere :D

I live 5 minutes walk from the mainline station and can be in london in 1hr 42min, exeter in 24 minutes, bristol in 35 minutes, cardiff in 1hr 53min, birmingham in 2hr 5min, plymouth 1hr 26min

I would not call 10 million population less than 2 hours by train particularly limiting - even if only 1% of them are potential "dates" (i'm quite fussy :D) that still gives me up to 100,000 potential dates purely travelling by train

39 miles to see your MIL !!
I know people who would say 3.9 miles is to far to see her.

It's one thing to say you could do it, but quite another to actually do it - week in, week out.

I would ideally select a date with a better apartment than mine (nicer views if possible) and move in, meaning I could then let mine out as I doubt many people would want to move to taunton :D
  • I suppose everyone has a different definition, or boundary, on what long distance means for them. I wouldn't consider 50 miles a big deal.

One of my first serious relationships was long distance and involved two hours travel by public transport, then a plane journey, then three hours drive on the other side. It was before you could check in online so usually involved hanging around the airport for ages as well. Having been there, done that, it's not really something I want to do again. It wastes a lot of time and money.

I have a friend who has been in a long distance relationship for about eight years or thereabouts and it involves a 5-6 hour drive every time she wants to visit her partner. They have never made any attempt to change the situation and have no plans to do so in future. When they talk about living together (which is rare), it seems to be in 10-20 years time and they haven't agreed where it would be, although they both frequently complain about the difficulties of long distance. I couldn't be dealing with a long distance relationship like that; I'd have to know the distance was temporary.

As she's terminally ill with cancer I'm currently doing this journey twice a week, whilst also taking my 5 year old to school and researching moving her to a nursing home nearer to our house. My husband has already lost his Dad and his sister to cancer so a few miles in the car to make her life easier isn't a huge imposition, it's the least I can do for her.
  • Yes, we did the other side of the world for 3 years and are now married.

50 miles is nothing; I'm quite shocked by the question. I'd drive 50 miles to meet someone for a cuppa if I fancied them.
People need to stop getting oh so shocked. It's like daily mail here sometimes.

It was an arbitrary number that was picked when discussing with others. 50 miles MINIMUM..so that doesn't exclude 100, 200, 300 miles or more. That is, they don't live in your city or town or nearby and you need some pre planning or arrangement to see them. ..for example a distance like this may exclude all or some weekday visits depending what hours each worked.

    Blimey.

Missus lived 180 miles away when I first met her. Spent 18 months driving across on my days off to see her but then got fed up doing that so I married her and we moved into MQ where I was stationed. Now been married 38 years
