Those pesky Chinese copycats are at it again!
The UK invented using excessive population growth (via immigration) as a method to disguise our non-existent economic growth and laughable GDP.
Now the Chinese are aiming to pull the same trick but achieving it via unfettered breeding.

Re-posting for Clapton as he ignored it the first time and apparently still doesn't understand the 4-2-1 problem..

Lets illustrate this simple maths problem visually....

The 4 grandparents being supported by 1 worker....

The 2 parents also being supported by the same worker..

The 1 worker supporting 6 other people.

(No wonder he looks tired and stressed out)

The "specific problem of the people of the region" is that there's a great big huge whacking demographic problem in China that's going to cause chaos with the economy and political stability in the region for decades to come.

Is there something about that incredibly obvious concept you don't understand?

Wars have been fought for less....

history is littered with examples of excessive population leading to wars and conquests

do you have many where falling population has had a similar events?

Lets illustrate this simple maths problem visually....

    ..

    Simplistic rather than simple.

You divide people into those who need spoon-feeding and those who haul overloaded carts.
In a modern economy such as China is rapidly becoming there are about a million different posibilities in between, and many of them are perfectly capable of being filled by older people.
The 70-year old efficiently serving in B&Q doesn't have to be supported by a struggling worker with a handcart.

An economy adjusts, if it is allowed, to make use of the resources it has.
There is no such thing as a shortage, just failure to let a dynamic economy adjust to circumstances.

Ageing populations will be a problem in many countries for decades to come. Still, I'd much rather tackle that problem than continue to have unsustainable population growth.

China's fertility rate is lower than other countries with similar levels of development, it will be interesting to see how much it increases (if at all) over the coming years.

EDIT: By the way, China's fertility rate is 1.7, not 1.

.My son was at uni with a number of Chinese. A large number.

His year had just 2 English and 1 German students, the remainder were (third? generation) Chinese.

He made many good friends among them but one thing he told me (obvious when you think about it, but I didn't) which floored me is that they have no concept of siblings. They have no Uncles, Aunts or Cousins.

    Now they will have.

That, to me, is a paradigm shift in social structure. It will be interesting to see how it pans out.
