Is anybody else fed up with their inbox being crammed with Black Friday offers? I'm not opening any of them, just immediately deleting.
Some of them might be brilliant but it's absolute torment when you're skint:o. I'll be glad when it's all over, but a lot of companies are discounting all weekend:eek:0 -

I've had cats for 40 years and never even considered insurance until we got this one. A lot of people I know have had massive vet bills for orthopaedic work done to their cats as a result of road accidents, well over £1000 a time. Being in a bad financial state I was very worried how I would find the necessary money if I needed it and until a couple of years ago the premiums were reasonable (no more than £100 a year).
They started going up round at the time I entered on a DMP where I have no access to credit whatsoever and all my savings had been used on paying debts. I was too scared then to cancel the policy:o. Even if I'd saved the equivalent amount of the premium in my bank account it would still only have been a tiny fraction needed for major surgery. I have a kamikaze cat, he puts himself in no end of danger climbing trees and jumping from roof to roof, not to mention charging across the road chasing rabbits or pheasants several times a day:eek:. A typical candidate for accident insurance if ever there was one:(.
Anyway, I've cancelled my policy now and will save around £180 a year in premiums but it won't be anywhere near enough if anything serious happens. Obviously I'll also try to save more whenever I can but it's not easy. I hope I don't come to regret my decision.
Incidentally, did you mean that you would have paid over £1750 in 5 years on your dog's policy if you'd had one? Or did you just mean that you've saved that amount? I thought my £180 was steep and it only got that expensive this past year.
I can see your problem cbc - and that does present a predicament !
Yes when we got him (Retired Greyhound) the "linked insurance" was quoted at £350 a year ! so that £1750 would be what we would have PAID out! - They are quite delicate (greys) with those long thin spindly legs and all that sprint power - and they know nothing about "the big world" - quite liable to run full tilt into a barbed wire fence if they're "chasing" - but like any kid, if you give them a bit of leeway and guidance as opposed to restricting them all the time they soon (ish) become "Proper dogs" and of course they're bred for fitness not form - so apart from not being terribly bright and having fairly weak dentistry - they don't really have any "breed weaknesses" He's had a bunch of teeth out - but I'm not convinced "Insurance" would have paid for that any more than PPI would pay for "Self employeds"
Edited to say - if you want a loving pet - get a grey ! As long as you have a sofa and can walk them for about 40 minutes a day - that's really all they ask except food ! - they hardly need any excercise in comparison to other breeds and sleep (doze) 23 hours a day They are even ok with being left alone for much of the day !0 -
I love greyhounds, Procrastinater. Well done to you for taking a retired one on and giving it a proper life and a loving home:T. My brother had two over the years, they were the gentlest, sweetest-natured dogs I've ever known. I always said if we ever had a dog we'd have a retired greyhound but I can't cope with the expense of more than the cat at the moment:o
By the way, dental work isn't covered by most policies. The insurers make sure they don't have to pay for all the 'normal' treatments that clients want:(. My company did a top of the range policy that did cover dental work but it was eye-wateringly expensive:eek:. Needless to say that wasn't the one I had;)0 -
OOh greyhound lovers,
Without giving too much away I have family connections to a lovely greyhound rescue and up until last christmas I had a lovely lurcher of my own. He sadly passed suddenly and unexpectedly last year a couple of days before Christmas. He was an old boy and I was forced to cancel pet insurance when the premiums rose by £20 per month to £57 per month. It does get expensive as they get older.

that's brilliant, well done. it all adds up and soon you will be debt free.
me, as forever am fighting everything, now it is the phone companies
It feels like that doesn't it, you sort one thing out and something else creeps up - for example I just got a water bill for a house I moved out of in July, the bill is until march 2016.... If anyone can work that one out.
I hope you sort it out soon xTotal Debt [STRIKE]£25,460 [/STRIKE](23/02/2016) £13,416.94.(paid 48%)

I'm so sorry to read that your lovely dog died last year. Big hugs:kisses3:
I was amazed how much my cat insurance increased this year (about 25%). It's not as if he's old, he's only just 7, and all my previous cats have led healthy lives until very late teens, even 20 for one of them. I know the premium would increase with age but if it's gone up by that much by 7 I dread to think what it would have been by the time he's a teenager:(0 -
