  • Not money making but had a decent result for an ongoing problem today. I was only working 1 day a week for 4 months last year as work wasn't coming in so I was claiming job seekers - a massive £16 a week. I also received housing benefit and council tax benefit. When we found out Stewart had got a job I stopped bothering to get the job seekers even though he wasn't starting for 2 months, I thought my time would be better spent organising the move and selling stuff to de clutter.

Well it turns out if you stop claiming job seekers they take your housing benefit and council tax support off you. Well they don't they give it to you then tell you you owe it to them.

So I got a bill for £850 overpaid council tax support and housing benefits, I have been fighting and fighting it and they haven't been listening basically accusing me of fraud and saying that I was working more than I said I was.

I got a court summons a week ago which really made me panic, another week of letters and phone calls and they have finally realised I am not a fraud. They have written off the council tax debt and reduced the housing benefit bill to £200 as I did earn more than I predicted so that's fine.

The really annoying thing is that I still have to pay the £45 court fee but I am just going to pay it to get it over with as it's been going on for so long I just want it over.

Also I made £25.14 on eBay after fees etc so that takes my total to £388.27 I need to get a move on if I want to reach my £450 target in the next 5 days x

Not really much to report from me over the last few days. It won't help this month, but I finally got my bank details through from HSBC - I opened this account 2 months ago to get their switching incentive of £100 and the banker confirmed that I should get this next month :)

Talking of bank switches, does anyone have experience or advice on what I should do about this:
In July I got a payment from a company into a bank account I switched FROM 2 years ago. The 7 day switch promise states that money should automatically bounce to my new account. This didn't happen. The original closed bank said they would just reject the payment because there is no longer an account, and the company that paid me sent me confirmation of the payment into the closed account. Plus it never appeared in the account I switched TO. I've been round in circles, but I can't seem to work out who is at fault or how to get my money! Any ideas?

If you switched 2 years ago, you would have been one of the early users of the 7 day switching service. Originally, they only forwarded payments for 13 months after the old account was closed. Obviously this time has passed.

What I expect has happened is the funds have been rejected and are back with the sender. This company need to check their account for a credit. They will have confirmation they sent it to you, because they did, but it will have gone back to the original account. But like the post office, proof of sending is not proof of receipt :)

IF they insist it hasn't come back, they need to get their bank to put a trace on the payment - the exact process depends on how it was paid.

Thanks for this TheBanker. Now you mention the 13 month thing, it rings a bell. What you say about it bouncing back to the company is what the bank said so that must be what happened (I trust what you say. I thought the bank were fobbing me off :rotfl:

Great, I'll send an email to the company tonight!! Thanks for your help

I have an avios account I had forgotten about, so reactivated it and they are giving me 1000 avios points. Looking at my account, I can cash out for 1 child ticket to London Eye. My DS wants to go up it, so that will be fab. Now to find a adult goes free with a paying child to London Eye lol.
Can't find any free ones but there are some for sale on the bayofE for £15.50. Don't know if that's any help :o

Yipee! Went in to debenhams last weekend to attempt to return a watch which had lost most of it's 'silver' after a couple months of wear. Used Martin's money forum advice on returns quoting phrases from the SAD FART acronym when the cashier was unwilling to replace it. I argued long enough and got given a replacement for free :-) £25 not spent and some useful advice gained on what to look for in my next purchase and care of product for future. Happy happy!
Well done for standing your ground and getting the free replacement :T So many people wouldn't have bothered and you've saved the replacement monies as well
