Hubby has gone to France for six months for work. He has an O2 pay as you go and I have an O2 contract. Whats the best way to stay in touch? Is the O2 My Europe Extra bolt on the way to go?

That's one possibility, but it might depend on how long you will spend talking to each other. If you have free calls to O2 and it's likely to be half an hour most evenings I'd say go for it.

Another is a global SIM with free incoming calls, and you'd call that.

There are even some with an O2 number on, but as this is actually via a separate mvno I'm not sure whether O2 would count it as included in any free O2 call bundles that some customers happen to have.
  • Sorry about this but us newbies eh, eh? Tut, Tut!! I am in France and simple question. WHAT is best tariff to be on on using phone in France to call UK WITH HANDSET from THE uk ?? And a contract. Special offers do NOT tempt me!! Best price plan gets my vote all the time! And more especially if it has a Samsug Notebook attached please??

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

Are you permanently in France? If not, is it not too late to ask? And there is no and cannot be the best plan for everyone. It depends on what actually you need. Re the notebook, data roaming is expensive and you can always do much better by getting a local sim. However, most tariffs for mobile phones exclude data tethering to a computer.

Surely the question is can anyone give me some real help? NOT as to whether I AM or am NOT in France?? And you do (Pardon me for saying) MAke an assumption it is DATA roaming I am interested in? NOt at all! I am more interested as I think the notepad will help me more as a diary! I have personal problems which mean that those SILLY little buttons are impossible to press and I was hoping I could link the phone to MY PC at home and download the data is all. But I REALLY do appreciate you taking time to reply. After all how could you POSSIBLY know my reasons for wanting this item? BUT Tariffs in France are JUST too expensive!

I have since this and after doing some digging of my own FOUND a supplier?? Of airtime fro a flat rate of €19.99 a month on contract with your own sim where ALL manner of communication (Subject to fair use) is free! So you have at least made me do something, so again THANKS!

My apologies for the confusion with the notebook. In the country where I originate from the English word 'notebook' is a synonym of the English word 'laptop'.

The topic title of this thread is "Mobile Roaming: Cheapest Calls When You're Abroad" so I can understand people's replies.

Perhaps a different thread would have been better?

If one is semi-permanently in France, contract is the way to go.
For roaming, people will unsurprisingly suggest pay as you go solutions.
  • OK erm, THANKS but NO thanks eh?? We are getting on and have managed without your rather challenging message till now?

As was once said you SHOULD remove the BEAM from thine own eye before removing the splinter from the others.

    Get the drift??
