Thomson Legal PPI Claim

  • I was also scammed by Verus Assoc. Having pursued getting my money back from Thomson Legal, I'm now taking the matter to the Legal Ombudsman. Despite Thomson categorically telling me they have nothing to do with Verus Assoc., (by an incredibly rude compliance officer) after a little investigation online, I don't believe this is the case. The named director of Verus Associates is Ross Elliott. The same Ross Elliott who is the 'National Relations Manager' at Thomson Legal. Both companies are based in Carmarthen.
I'm also seeing if I can get the money back through my credit card, but hoping the Legal Ombudsman will investigate Thomson and no one else will lose £499!
  • Ive just had a call from these.....
A very nice lady at first who didnt explain anything about an upfront charge of £499.

So now im on the hook and im passed through to an expert to assess my claim. Im now told i have a good chance of success in my claim. Even though I have already told them that I have had a PPI payout from Barclays & signed a letter saying I was happy with the payout & would not pursue anymore claims against them.
No you still can claim was the response..
Anyway im now told theres a charge of £499 and a 25% fee from any final amount.

Like an idiot i sign the paperwork.... Now I instantly regret this after the call is finished!!

What can I do to stop this payment?

Send an e-mail to support@thomsonlegal.uk.com with a cc to consumer@claimsregulation.gov.uk complaining that you were not told about the fee of £499 before signing up and that you consider this to be breach of General Rule 1 of the Conduct of Authorised Persons Rules 2014.

Have a look at the rules and identify any other breaches and include them in your complaint. The regulator has also produced some handy guidance to help businesses comply - which is useful in showing why it has not.

Then demand to be released from your contract and for any money you have paid to be refunded.
  • Well, as an update to my situation..last month my credit card provider shut down my account and cleared the £499 balance, and I managed to get through to these scammers on the phone to tell them to cancel any contract, which the rude person on the phone said fine too and hung up, and that was the last I heard on the matter.
Last week, I had an email to say my refund of the £499 had been processed..I didnt think any more of it as as far as I know, they never got my money..Lo and behold a couple of days ago I check my card account, and ive got a £499 refund from them, putting my account £499 in credit..

Errr...any ideas anyone what to do from here?

Your credit card provider, having already performed a "chargeback" at your behest, will now reverse this which will reset your account to zero.
If you now purchase anything else on your card, you'll be charged the normal % if you don't pay it off at the next due date.
  • I have just had two calls from them as I cut them short yesterday, I to would not pay anything up front for this service. it is astonishing that they are still calling people when they are being investigated. I was daft enough to listen to them and it all sounds to good to be true but £499 up front! Nah!!
When I got the first call and Jasmine was chatting away and commenting on the weather I happened to comment on her calling from Lowestoft (an STD code I know by heart 01603) to be told she was in Wales?? Today I noticed it was a different number 018 something I think but having been transferred it changed to the 0333 number.
Best they got out of me was the Customer Service number off my Credit Card.
  • Wow-zer!!

Boy, am I glad I found this thread!

I was contacted today by "The Claim Team" (theclaimteam.com - no 's' at the end of 'claim').

They gave me the spiel of "we can check all your finance agreements going back to when you were 18, blah blah blah..."

They sent me the email info and tried to get me to electronically sign everything over the phone but luckily I had my head on properly today and said I wanted 24hrs to check over everything. They're calling me back tomorrow afternoon.

It was the £499 "holding" fee that got me. "We hold £499 on your credit card, you won't ever have to pay a bill on it because your claim will be settled in no more than 40 days" (yeah well, I get a credit card bill every 30 days mate, you do the maths).

Tomorrow I shall be telling them where to stick it, I won't be mincing my words at all after reading all the other comments on here.

The Financial Ombudsman publish their investigation outcomes on their website and there aren't any so far for Thomson Legal, Verus Associates or The Claim Team. Please, someone who is currently battling with these disgusting fleecers to get your money back, please PLEASE raise an investigation with the Ombudsman. If they are not brought to a governing body's attention then they will just be allowed to carry on as they are, scamming people who don't have enough sense to investigate before signing anything.

Some may say these people deserve to be scammed if they're too ignorant to investigate a company first but it's those of us who have our wits about us that have to take the lead, we at least have some integrity, unlike these companies who will literally do and say anything for a quick buck.

If anyone has any questions they'd like me to ask "The Claim Team" when they call me tomorrow, please post and I'll try and get some information/a reaction out of them.

Paying up front makes no sense when they don't know if you had PPI

They can't guarantee 40 days turn around either

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

It's interesting (and amusing) you're suggesting people use the S75 to get a refund (i.e. trying to get the bank to refund the fee) - Thomson Legal should be refunding the fee themselves assuming they are still trading and solvent (as your post suggest they are)
