Giving advent calendars to trick or treaters?

  • They got SlimFast bars from me a few years ago. I opened the door to them accidentally, and they were the only 'treats' my mum had in

I wouldn't encourage trick or treaters. It's an Americanism we imported a few decades ago. Why oh why do we always have to copy what they do.
I've changed my mind about this recently. I live in a very small sub-neighbourhood where there has been a sudden surge in young families, and know who lives here. Parents thankfully have the sense to lurk in the background when their kids dress up and knock on doors.

I'll be leaving my light on early in the evening to let people know it's safe home to approach, and offer treats. (The generosity of neighbours when I was little is something that stays with me, always). Will switch off when I go out later to discourage teenagers, though....surely they grow out of this kind of thing when they go to secondary school?

  • You would have been my hero as a little girl if you had given me an advent calendar! They were among my favourite things as a child and I always followed the rules and never opened a door early. If you had given me one for Halloween I probably would have washed your car for free for a month, or something!

The advent calendars won't fit in to the plastic caldron/bucket that the little kids carry around.!

Advent calendars are for Xmas. Why would you give one at Halloween ? Bake some buns, stick an icing spider on top, kids love them.

Growing up in Scotland I went guising , not trick or treating.

We dressed up and sang a song or recited a poem or told a joke and got small treats as a reward. We never resorted to tricking which started in America.

After Halloween we built a bonfire and made a guy for the top. We put the guy in cart or old pushchair adn wheeeld him round the neighbourhood asking people we met for a penny for the guy. We also knocked on doors with our request.

The money collected was used to buy fireworks to enjoy with out bonfire on 5 th November.

Our neoghbourhood had a joint bonfire on the drying green to which all the neighbours and thier children would come and bring their fireworks.

The Americans imported it from Scotland and Ireland so that's a pretty strange attitude.

I suppose if you go back far enough, the (non-native) Americans imported just about everything, including themselves :D

Many arriving to the New World were British escaping religious persecution. Not only did they import themselves but small pox as well. Why you find that funny is beyond me.
