Fit winter tyres mid September and swap to summer tyres late July. 8 weeks of warmer weather seems about right lately.

  • 8 weeks? Positively tropical compared to what we've had this year!

I didn't put mine on until December last year (in Perthshire) as the autumn was mild, but they have been on as early as mid-October. I just wait until the forecast says it's going to be a cold spell and do them then, although as they were on a set of steel wheels I just did it myself so no appointment needed. I'm hoping that as I'm now in Birmingham and driving less I won't need them at all.

I understand that Winter Tyres are so good that you ought really to use them all year round. Saves the hassle of changing over as well.

    You misunderstand, then.

Winters lose grip rapidly above about 7degC, wear more rapidly, give a harsher ride and more noise, as well as having a higher rolling resistance, so using more fuel.

If you want an all-year round compromise, then all-seasons are starting to become more widely available in the UK.

top moneysaving tip it saves wear on your summer tyres when they are in the garage so they last much longer

no wait i am sure there is a flaw in that theory somewhere

Where do you live? If it's Lerwick then might as well get them on soon, if it's Penzance, I'd sell them.
