why isn't virgin forced to share its network?

looks like my bt cabinet isn't going to be updated in the near future due to the number of virgins in my area.

no virgin customers are going to switch to bt until bt are as fast so we have no competition in my area.

bt has been forced into sharing its network. why hasn't virgin?

Bit of rash statement, I did.

Think BT are a public utility or something similar, Virgin are a private company. And anyway their respective networks are totally different.

BT's network was funded by the Government. Virgins was funded by the original cable companies, NTL/Telewest, a debt that virgin is still paying off now

If you want the extra speed then why not just switch to virgin ?

The reason why Virgin are not forced to 'share' their network is primarily because Ofcom don't believe they have significant market power.

    good question.

i have never been a fan of any of the virgin brands but i have also been spammed by virgin at least twice a week for the last 5 years. i have repeatedly asked them to stop but the mail and knocks on the door keep coming.

there are just some companies you don't want to pass over your hard earned cash to and virgin is one for me.

    Maybe not, my speeds:

Virgin: 30Mbps down, 1 Mbps up
TT Fibre: 78+ Mbps down, 19Mbps up.

I wanted the higher upload speed, and VM did not to offer it at the time unless you had their 100Mbps service plus regular price increases, sometime twice a year, and the hassle of phoning each month to get promised prices.

If you want a high high speed service you have little choice but to go to whomever supplies it in your area. I could get a higher DL speeds with VM now but I don't need it so no reason for me to go back to them.
  • Hmm, my Virgin gives me 29.65Mbs down and 2.87 up ... wish up was more, but it's not terrible
