New Washing Machine Needed

Experiences, good and bad from those who have recently bought a new washing machine please.

Done plenty of research but huge selection out there and thought I would ask for recent experience before taking the plunge.

Family of 2 as kids have flown the nest so don't need huge capacity. Would like economical in terms of water and power, quiet, reliable make, shortish cycles as well as longer if required.

I have Which? subscription but no that best buy doesn't necessarily always mean that and some members reviews query how some makes and models are classified as best buys.

Drawn towards Bosh, Zanussi and Samsung based on history, personal experience and recommendations but not bound by anything so any comments welcomed, good or bad.

Old Hoover model has given sterling service for over 11 years now, been repaired several times by myself (motor brushes, blockages, switches etc) and now time to get a bit more modern, quitter and with some hopefully clever programme options.

Best brand out there is Miele for washing machines.

I have one. Well worth the money and come with a 5 year guarantee. Seriously, spend more on a Miele and you'll not regret it.

Worth looking at the warranties, Samsung give 5 year warranties on a lot of their lower-mid priced models whereas Bosch only give 2 years with most models, you only see 5 year warranties on their top end models.

I mentioned that because the heater on my mid priced Bosch washing machine failed after 3 years (fortunately I replaced it myself for £10) and the bearing on my parents Bosch washing machine failed at about the same age.

We bought a Miele for £625 from John Lewis a few months ago. A superb machine. This did come with £75 cash back from the manufacturer however I have not been able to claim this back as Miele will not accept an email receipt as proof of purchase and John Lewis will not give me a proper invoice as this was bought online.
  • I would definitely recommend Miele, I have a Washer Dryer and its by far the best machine I've ever used.

Think I got either a 10 year or 20 year guarantee with mine!
  • another vote for miele I got mine from ao it came with £75 cash back a 5 year guarantee and 12 months interest free credit if wanted

Good Luck, samsung get slated on john Lewis website from customer reviews. That put me off buying one.
  • We bought a 7kg 1200 spin Beco for under £200.

Ours are on twice a day, every day. After an overnight away and a teenager cleaning his room, it was on 5 times last Monday. With 6 of us, it's probably considered industrial use.

I still have the old one, which I will try to repair as a standby for when this one has an issue that means it will be out of action whilst arranging spares.

We normally go through one every 2-3 years.

Last one started throwing the belt off. Looks like the bush in the plastic wheel the belt goes onto has an issue, or it could be the threads for the bolt holding it onto the machine thats away.
One before that was bearing failure, but it was a sealed unit so couldn't replace it.

Dont know how valid extended warranty plans would be, theres sometimes coins missed in pockets that dent the drum, and I dont weigh the washing before it goes in so that could invalidate any claim as well.

The new one has had the plug cut off on day 1, could be an urban myth, but I'm thinking that affects any warranty as well.

Who would want to pay Miele prices, its still cheaper to buy a "Cheepo" & change every 2-3 yrs.
