Credit card companies charge different 'interchange' fees depending on the product and credit worthiness of the retailer or the sector it operates in.

Fees in the travel sector are high because the card company is jointly responsible if something goes wrong with your holiday or the travel company goes bust. Generally this happens more often than say with supermarkets who pay a much lower fee to the card company.

My personal view is that the price for paying by cash or credit card should be the same. Both carry costs for the retailer in terms of security and bank charges (cash) and fees (credit cards). There should probably be a discount for using a debit card though - lower fees and no security risks.

This would prevent the likes or ryanair and other companies quoting one price in adverts and then charging a completely different one for the most efficient payment method possible.

if it means selling at a loss of course they would ! we have had the odd potential customers ring us and say they have had a cheaper quote elsewhere ............off you go then is the reply lol

I take your point, but surely any goods/services that you have to offer include a profit for the retailer,

I also renewed my car tax on line last night, free for debit card, 2.5% with credit card.
