Gas meters go to 'sleep' and only 'wake up' to quickly send data over to the electric meter or IHD, which takes seconds, ensuring its battery should last for years!!

The issue I have is that I live in a valley and only one mobile phone network provides a working service. The Q&A states that the smart function is subject to it receiving an adequate signal.

What if you have different providers for gas and electricity and no smart electric meter? Does this mean you can't then have a smart gas meter?
  • The smart electric is the important one, the gas smart relies on that so if you have an Npower smart electric it will work fine but a smart gas with, say, BG will have to link with another suppliers meter to work as a smart. . Smart switching is supposed to be happening in 2016 but this is a different question relying on two suppliers agreeing to work with each other. Good question .

Seems to be a dogs dinner that as yet one company's smart meter might not be compatible with another suppliers ability to read it. I switch suppliers every year and have no issues in asking every supplier for their "free" smart meters that every customer will be paying for in higher bills.
