Where does a gas smart meter get its power from?

So I have been notified that like the rest of the country I am getting smart meters to replace my gas and electric meters.
So the question is where does the gas meter get its power from to send the readings over a secure wireless network? I am assuming some sort of electrical feed will have to be run to the meter cupboard to power the meter.

Battery !, it only sends the reads a very short distance to the electric meter which is mains powered.0

Speaking of powered, who pays for the meters power consumption.0

Not the customer, just like the normal digital electric meter it takes its power from the mains before the customers meter. The in house display monitor is powered from metered energy. I m told its no more than 60 p year. Most people stuff it away in a drawer after a few months0 -

Remember. You don't need to accept "smart" meters, and I recommend you decline their "kind" offer.0 -

Why not - you need a meter so there's no reason why it shouldn't be a smart one. Hopefully you'll get accurate up to date bills rather than guesstimates. I wish I could get one to save me sending in readings every month.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

The smart meter is not exclusively for the direct benefit of the end user. Ultimately, it will help the energy distributor to manage supply and demand (smart grids).
There could be a differential standing charge for those who decide not to agree to the installation of the smart meter.I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".0 -
Not sure what i think having had a read, lots of information but it seems to be a lot from people with tin foil hats. I will probably wait till i have no choice, for now its no chore to read the meter every so often.0
