Have a look at the Control panel - Hardware - Devices - Device manager - Display drivers and see what's listed
Running XP, can't see "Hardware" in CP, but clicked on Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Device manager, showing lots of stuff but can't see "Display drivers".

Ok, your graphics drivers are borked for whatever reason.
What is the operating system, and what is the make and model of the laptop ?
I will talk you through repairing them
Andy
Oh, and when you say you have run checkdisk, can I just confirm that you ran CMD as administrator, then typed CHKDSK /R
and then proceeded with a reboot ?
OS is xp Home edition, desktop not laptop, 10-12 years old no model, (supplied by a local, now defunct, dealer).
Re checkdisk, don't know, did the following:
My computer > right click on Local disc C > Properties > Tools > check now > automatic fix system errors > Start > "unable to run, do you wish to run next start up? > Yes > reboot.

The following appeared on start up this morning:
“The ATI control panel failed to initialise because no ATI driver is installed, or driver is not working properly. The ATI control panel will now exit.”OS is xp Home edition, desktop not laptop, 10-12 years old no model, (supplied by a local, now defunct, dealer).
We need to know what model of laptop you have. Even if you bought it from a dealer, it should still have a manufacturer and a model number. Chances are that this model number is on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop, or perhaps underneath the battery.
If you still can't find the make + model number, try downloading and running CPU-Z. This is a free utility that will tell you what model of hardware is in your laptop, and will hopefully point us in the right direction of getting the proper drivers for you."The file or directory C:\……………………IE5 is corrupt and unreadable. Please run chkdsk utility."
Sounds like a temporary internet file glitch. Annoying but shouldn't do any harm.
You can always navigate to the folder in question and see if it lets you rename or delete it. Worst-case, there are unlocker utilities that will completely nuke the directory for you.0 -

It is not a laptop, it is a desktop.

.
We are telling you the problem - You need drivers for your display adapter.
So help us determine the actual make/model of the hardware inside your COMPUTER ..
And re checkdisk , that is normal behaviour, it cant scan the system files because they are in use - so it schedules the scan/repair for next reboot .
Did you see that happening when you next rebooted ?

It doesn't matter - same advice applies

There are that many I don't know which to use, and what do I do when/if I get the right one?
