Had another problem this morning, 3 days after updating Firefox to 41.0.2 in that my computer shutdown completely and I had to reboot from CD etc, my problem now is that I cannot get the correct resolution for my monitor, (1920 x 1080).
Running XP Home Edition and when going into control panel > Display > Settings, it only gives a maximum on the slide bar of 1280 x 1024.
Clicking advanced only gives a “Default Monitor” and the “Properties” button greyed out.
How do I get my proper resolution back? TIA.

When you say you rebooted it with the cd, do you mean reinstall ?
if so, did you install the graphics card drivers. Sounds like its just using the generic ones, which will limit the resolution it accepts0 -

Not sure, I did not do a full new install.
During “reboot” it did say:
“Set up determined that drive “C” is corrupted and cannot be repaired. Set up cannot continue”

If you don't have a CD with the specific drivers for your make and model of monitor, try googling and / or searching the manufacturers website for the latest driver to download and instal.... I do have the original CD, but when going through the on screen manual it is saying "If the 'Properties' button is inactive, it means your monitor is properly configured. Please stop installation."
And that button is inactive.

I would proceed with the monitor installation anyway.
The other possibility is that the actual video card (or onboard video chip) in the computer is not using the right driver for your resolution. Try updating the driver for that.... The following appeared on start up this morning:
“The ATI control panel failed to initialise because no ATI driver is installed, or driver is not working properly. The ATI control panel will now exit.”
What is ATI control panel?
Also windows corrupt file:
"The file or directory C:\……………………IE5 is corrupt and unreadable. Please run chkdsk utility."
I have run this and still have the problem.

Ok, your graphics drivers are borked for whatever reason.
What is the operating system, and what is the make and model of the laptop ?
I will talk you through repairing them
Andy
Oh, and when you say you have run checkdisk, can I just confirm that you ran CMD as administrator, then typed CHKDSK /R
and then proceeded with a reboot ?0 -
Have a look at the Control panel - Hardware - Devices - Device manager - Display drivers and see what's listed0
