licence question

if a person now aged in his 60s had a provisional motorcycle licence many many years before the law was changed from a 250 to the 125cc rule and the introduction of the CBT, can he now in his later years ride a 125 with L plates without doing a CBT?

the person has progressed from a small bike on L plates , to a full car licence 40 odd yrs ago

this info (regarding before CBT) seems to be missing from the DVLA site

    No
He lost the right to ride a 250 back in 82(ish) and then needed to do CBT if he wanted to carry on riding a 125 a decade or so later.

At the time it was a 'do It' or stop riding
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.
  • No, he must sit a cbt and will need to renew it every 2 years.
He will only be able to ride a moped(49cc) without a cbt certificete
If it isn't broken, don't try to fix it.

and was that instant ? this info seems to be missing in the SVLA history

just for simplicity , you apply and pay for a provisional licence (think we were on green ones then , ie 10 yr to renew) and they change the laws overnight , where refunds given?

His only chance of avoiding it is if he passed a moped test before the rules came in - not many people did that though.

no, there was a big lead up to it with a rush to get it done towards the end.

I remember them being green, but not needing to be renewed after ten years. Mind you I only had it a few weeks and can't say I really looked at the expiry date.

The old green ones (my wife still has one) expire when you reach 70 IIRC

  • so is he still running on a valid licence? this makes no comments to CBT and clearly shows that the expiry of his licence , inc his motorcycle provisional is 70?

Yes, the licence is valid, but only for groups that the current regs allow plus any grandad rights.

Bottom line, he needs to do a CBT to ride a 125 on the road

How did that work with the CBT not being introduced until 1990?
