hello and wlecome - you have made a great start and got some great advice so all I wanted to add was that my starting debt was similar to yours and I can't believe how much I have paid off in two years. It feels amazing even though I still have a way to go - so it can be done and as you now can hopefully see, and as others have said, you are not alone. well done on getting this far.Debt at highest - June 2013 - 26k/ March 2018 - 2500
Proud to be dealing with my debts0 -
I'm so excited!!!! The clothes I returned have been received and there's enough with that refund and the money out of my pot of dreams to pay off my next account!!! 😃😃😃 I'm going to pay it off and close it. Okay so a teeny dent in my debt but I'm still chuffed!

I had a similar problem and found having talking therapy actually helped me to lessen my spending, and made me feel less alone. Alongside doing all the normally recommended things to get on top of your debt, speak to your doctor and see if therapy might help you mind a better outlet.
Really wish you all the very best.
Hi kjjm thank you for the reply and yes I think you're right I think that would really help me0 -

Hi popstress
I cannot recommend first direct enough. I've been with them 10+ years and their customer service is amazing.
The normal bank account gets you a £250 overdraft that is interest free and a further £250 that has a fairly low amount of interest. Like you say they usually offer £100+ for new customersAlso I have lots of accounts with them (some bank accounts and some savings) so that I can keep money separate for different reasons e.g. car expenses etc.
I can also recommend green flag for breakdown cover - I have a basic cover for £33 a year.LBM = 07/09/13 Debt = £13339 (100% cleared)
New roof and car £8557/£19003 New kitchen £396/£5039 Credit card Paid Student loan Paid0 -
Hello and very well done so far!! It can be a scary and daunting place, but as you see, one that many of us have been, are either working through or come out the other side. Hubby had debt of over £20k (most from pre our relationship) and has paid it all back now, so it can be done!!
Well done on posting your SOA and you've already had some great advice. There is another, more detailed version out there (someone else can pull th link, I think it is stoozing.com) that can be formatted for this site. It is a great way to think about all the one-off payments that may not already be covered on yours. Things such as life insurance (if you have a mortgage), MOT, car servicing costs, haircuts, prescriptions/dental costs, pocket money, going out/entertainment, clohing, emergency fund etc. Paying off debt is brilliant, but if you can build up a small emergency fund, it may help in case something goes wrong and the need for credit arises again/blows you off the debt-free trail. Everyone's was different...mine was having 2 years of mortgage payments in the bank which could be viewed as a tad excessive!!! (but is currently being used)
Wishing you the best of luck0 -

Thank you! I'm looking into first direct at the moment. I just a little panick because it says the account says £10 fee but this is waived if you keep an average balance of £1000 per month. I'm a bit confused at the wording? Does that mean I have to have £1000 in all the time? Or as long as I do at some point? Sorry that's probably a really stupid question. I just don't understand it.
Thanks for the green flag reccomendatuon too, after I've changed accounts I'm going to take out a green flag policy too
That's a small saving and £100 towards my debt for switching0 -

With first direct, they waiver the £10 fee if you pay in £1000 or more a month, or you have a balance over £1000, or if you have additional products e.g. a savings account with them. In reality it means most of their customers don't pay the fee but I guess it stops people swapping just for the incentive money!LBM = 07/09/13 Debt = £13339 (100% cleared)
