I use generally use Henderson's Relish in place of Lea and Perrins though that might not be so easy to source outside Yorkshire and the North East.

You can order it online here - it's great stuff :)

I can answer one of your questions, Lea & Perrins according to the ingredients only contains fish in the form of anchovies. As I understand it vegetarians eat fish. It might taste meaty and is certainly added to stews etc. but in itself doesn't contain any meat.

    HTH with one thing.

As i understand it you are wrong!!

Quorn doesn't taste of much, so you'll need to combine it with strong flavours e.g by making a chilli or you might find it bland.

Also, strictly IMO, it's best in the long run to try and get used to making meals that are naturally vegetarian rather than always just switching the meat for substitutes. Cheaper and probably healthier, and it's just easier to eat well as a veggie when you get away from the idea that a meal is a meat-based main item accompanied by a veg or 2. Quorn is useful for making the transition easier though, I expect (it wasn't around when I went veggie!)

Also, what he really misses is Lee & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce on his cheese on toast. The only vegetarian equivalent I have come across is only sold in America, and they don't ship to the UK. Does anyone know of a veggie friendly alternative that is available in the UK please?

Crosse and Blackwells Worcestershire sauce is veggie

Mushroom ketchup is another good replacement for Worcestershire sauce.

No they don't. Pescatarians eat fish.

Unfortunately this is a common misconception, not helped by people who say "I'm vegetarian but eat fish" or even worse "im vegetarian but eat chicken!"

Drives me mad as you can probably tell!
  • Wow - thank you all for your lovely replies, and for the links, which I will bookmark and visit often :)

I knew marrying a Yorkshireman would pay off eventually (only been 30 years!) so if I can't find the Hendersons relish here, I will have a search next time we are up visiting the rellies.

It might be easier to find the Crosse & Blackwell one around here, so I will have a nosey in the shops today when I am out and about.

again - thank you all for your replies. I really do appreciate it

W-8-rose do their own veggie worcestershire sauce.

Ladyshopper it drives me mad, too - the amount of times I've been out somewhere and asked what they have for vegetarians and been told "we have fish...."

HurdyGurdy Here's a recipe I posted a while back for a similar query - sorry, I can't recall how to do tidy linkies.

So sorry I stand corrected. :) I truly thought that was the case.
