It has a properly registered copy of Win 8.1

umm , you mis understand me , win 10 is a free upgrade or pay for it , when you upgrade from a legal copy of 7/8 it will register your machine on their server , as you had a legal copy of 7/8 , however once the upgrade is done you can load a new copy on a blank drive , or your old drive reformatted , its the machine that's legal , not the win copy.

do your upgrade , then in a little box on the right taskbar (all settings) do updates and look at the activation tab , if activated , you can do a clean install , which I always feel runs faster and easier
