3G sims in 2G phones.

Hi,
Apologies if this is a stupid question, but does anyone have experience of using a 3G sim in a 2G phone? I want to know if it works (I appreciate that 3G functions won't work) or does the phone not accept a 3G sim? I've noticed the size of the sim are the same...
The reason I'm asking is that I'm thinking of transfering my existing contract to a 3G sim as I have a K800i but might also want to use this sim in another phone in emergencies like if the battery runs out.
Thanks in advance.

Which network are we talking about here? (3g is a technology)SLC: £13000+
Quidco: £131.24 (paid) + £0 (validated) = £131.24
Valued Opinions: £75 (paid) + £52.30 (received) + £4.50 (pending) = £131.80
StudentPanel: £250 -
I'm on O2.
I wasn't talking about any network in particular, just the technology and whether the 3G sim would work in a 2G phone (e.g W810i).0 -
should work fine! I only asked because if you used 3g sims on the Three network on a 2g phone you would have inevitably receive a warning from three, but as far as I know it's fine on O2SLC: £13000+

This warning is only on old style payg and contracts. New payg sim's can be used in any unlocked phone without any problem0 -

the payg new 3 simcards work. The ones in the white packaging. Unless you call 2610's, 1112's, 6230, u600 and lg shine and so on 3g phones.0
