  • Woolfybeds, my dogs love em.

My arthritic dog prefered to lie on the hard floor rather than a soft bed. I put mats down where she lay and she would go and lie on a bare bit of floor.

My dog's bed isn't squishy, but he it is warm and he prefers that.

The Canine Massage Therapist my Lurcher sees recommends soft sided beds for older, arthritic dogs. She says it's better for them to be able to stretch out fully, rather than be restricted by a rigid bed.

I have friends that use cot mattresses for their Greys and Lurchers - they can be picked up quite reasonably from the bay of E :) You can then cover them with a waterproof fitted sheet and top with a duvet for extra padding if you wish.

My Lurcher is about 11 now and has Degenerative Myelopathy in his hind legs, which makes it a bit more tricky for him to manoeuvre, so a stable bed that isn't too squashy meets his needs. I use the Danish Designs slumber beds with matching mattress, but they can be tricky to wash if you don't have a huge machine.

I also have a couple of flat beds I've cobbled together from existing flat memory foam mattresses I had, with a folded single duvet on the top for extra padding - we have something of an excess of beds in this house considering there are only two dogs :o but it means my wonky lad can be comfortable wherever he chooses to wander.

yo could always get a simple single duvet and single duvet case, fold in half and you got a dog bed. Both can be easily washed too...
  • Thanks for all the recommendations and advice. It is much appreciated.

My dog has a similar bed to the slumber bed you mentioned. I took the padded cushion out and put a memory foam mattress topper in it's place with a zipped cover on top. The zipped cover is washable and I wash his blankets aswell.

I do like the slumber bed style as it allows my dog to stretch out without falling off the bed lol.

Do you buy the extra x large size?

My lad has a 26" long back and uses the 36" beds. He would be lost in anything bigger, but that's more to do with him preferring something a little bit snugger. My 20" whippet also uses the same beds and is more than happy with all the space around her :rotfl:

  • I've recently got my 'getting on a bit' Lab one of these http://www.doggiesolutions.co.uk/coolaroo-dog-beds-15413-0.html

I had to stop her sleeping on the sofa as she'd fallen off it a couple of times when in a deep sleep and I was worried she was going to hurt herself - but, I didn't want her on the hard floor all the time.

I was concerned she might not use it but - she absolutely loves it!

I have a bit of vet-bed (cheap on e*bay) on the top and she's on it every night & most of the time during the day too!

Mine have bog standard pastic beds with profleece blankets, or duvets in winter. Both esily washed and dried.

They can stretch out fully to sleep on their backs with their legs akimbo, or curl up at the end an be supoorted by the curve.

They also like to lie with their chin resting on the dipped part of the rim.
  • mtbbuxton..I can't make out the overall sizes of these beds. I was looking at the largest size, but it doesn't tell you what size circumference they are if you know what I mean. The size of the bed he has now is something like 40" x 36".

rising from the ashes..my dog would most certainly fall off one of those beds lol. He's not allowed on the furniture, so is used to sleeping in his bed on the floor.
