My 11 year old bedlington/whippet is in need of a new bed. He does have a touch of arthritis, although he does have stiffness in his rear leg.

I have been looking on the internet and have discovered, on ebay, a company that makes dog beds which are essentially a doggy bean bag. I'm thinking this might be a good idea, but would be great if people could offer experience of this type of bed or other types of dog beds.

I don't know about bean bags tbh, but we get our doggy beds from TK Maxx. They were doing memory foam beds at our local one that looked ok, and they had quite a few large, soft beds with removable covers for £25.
I can tell you on good authority, that the ones we got our pooch passed the 'Basset Hound comfy test'

Some dogs do not like the noise the beans make or the feel of them.

The beans become flat over time and need replaced - a very messy job with polistyrene beads everywhere.

My dogs have big oval plastic beds and the equivalent of a single duvet folded in half (in a cover) inside. They love them, and judging by the number I have made and sold for charity doggy duvets are very popular! they are warm, soft and washable- because they are halves or quarters of S or D duvets they fit in the washing machine.

My son used to have a bean bag and one of my dogs hated contact with it, probably because he didn't feel safe when it moved.


Aldi,recently had a pet week , so may still have some memory foam beds on sale. Ours is over two years old, the cover regularly washed and it still looks good. However, my dogs are small and if larger, would like two, for extra thickness.

My dog was diagnosed with arthritis earlier in the year. I obtained several pieces of memory foam (a 1.5" ish double bed topper - folds into 4 for a decent size bed for a large breed, plus a bigger mattress that had about a 6" layer of memory foam I cut into to fit the existing bed cover), which she really seems fond of. She's on some supplements for her stiffness which make a huge difference (if I haven't raved about it to you elsewhere, do read up on golden paste/turmeric), but she does seem to choose the beds over anywhere else to lay, so I assume she finds them more comfortable.

The topper was about £5 on eBay and the 6" piece was from a free group on Facebook, so both very MSE!

Gitdog has the beanbag type and he seems much more comfortable on it. Far less circling and scratching to get comfy, which is less annoying for me as well. He's had it a year now and the beans are well flattened so I need to get some more (25kg dog) but I reckon if I do it outside it shouldn't be too bad.

for arthritis you want something supportive really and bean bag type of bed will not be suitable

My two have these and they are the best beds I've ever bought. Soft, comfortable, washable.

The bed he currently has at the moment is an old piece of memory foam. My Mam cut me a piece off the memory foam topper she was using in the caravan. Unfortunately she binned the rest if it.

His old bed had a cushion base with high sides all around (if that makes sense). I kept the outer ring and placed the memory foam in the centre. I suppose a bit like a donut bed.

The memory foam is breaking down now, so every time I take the cover off, there's bits of foam all over.

He is on supplements for his arthritis, so that is covered. I just need to sort out the bed situation.

I never give the noise of a bean bag a second thought, but your right, I don't think he would like it.

He is quite a big dog, 22kg and quite long. So I try to get beds which suit his length as he likes to stretch out.

What covers do people use to cover the foam?

My arthritic dog prefered to lie on the hard floor rather than a soft bed. I put mats down where she lay and she would go and lie on a bare bit of floor.
