Hello 21st century

Options
I have just discovered that THREE have upgraded our area mobile phone signal to 4G - Measured at 20/15 Mbps using speedtest

With a Fibre speed of 70+ Mbps - these speeds were just pipe dreams 12 months ago (when I was limited to ADSL) - isn't technology brilliant ?

I remember 20 years ago, downloading on a 56kbps connection (true speed about 20kbps)
And a similar (data) speed on my Nokia 9000i mobile

Makes me wonder what next ...

    fire ? the wheel ??
  • The true throughput of a 56Kbps dialup connection was typically about 40-45Kbps. On a BT line it could negotiate about 52Kbps connection speed (you could get all 56K on what is now Virgin Media due to the way the technology worked) and then you'd lose some of that with the overhead in encapsulating the data for transmission.

If you were only seeing 20Kbps throughput something else was wrong, not that it matters now.

Oh, and the v.90 standard wasn't proposed until 1998 so if you have a 56k modem 20 years ago you were three years ahead of everyone else! I was still struggling along with a v.34 modem in 1995.

Clearly you don't live in Norfolk. I have a holiday caravan there and the only way I can get 3G is by using an external antenna on a MiFi device. I gave up on Three for the phone as it wouldn't work at all most of the time. Checking their site they have no current plans for 4G in the area (not that the MifI I have would work on 4G anyway).

Norfolk - boldly stepping forward to year 2000 communications. That said I have seen quite a few VDSL cabinets in the towns nearby.

We have one in Wales and there is no phone signal at all. The nearest place with a basic phone signal is a one and a half mile drive away... a ten foot wide window of frustration, ironically right next to a public phone box.

Lol...I remember back in '95 that I had use of a freephone dialup number for net access. I can't remember exactly which company, but it was either Shell or Esso. Lasted for about 2 years before they pulled the plug.

Minimum 60 seconds to load a full screen jpeg image. Those were the days :D

On the mobile update issue, O2 have just switched on 4G in parts of Northern Ireland. I wonder if there was a funding deadline which had to be met???

I started with Freeserve (which offered a freephone service) - which became Orange - then Wanadoo, then TalkTalk (which, I am currently with) - funny how things happen....
Incidentally - it was Freeserve that gave me a totally free Pager that gave the first 160 text characters of any Emails sent to me !!

We have a holiday van there and surely, the fact that they are devoid of most 21st century diseases, is one of the main attractions......Holiday - Clues in the title...;):D

Ah but I'm retired and probably spend six months of every year here in total.

That's six months holidaying!.......Don't expect anyone to feel sorry for your lack of connectivity......;)
When we hit Norfolk there is no mobile signal or any chance of the net. It's bliss, If we wander into town, my phone will pick up any emails or messages, which is a good reason for staying out of town...:D
