Open staircase/carpet issue, help....

  • So the depth of the stair is 8.5 inches and I have checked and they don't overlap at all.

Had a carpet fitter round today. He can fit a carpet up the Sloap, would not be ideal as would have to glue and obviously would need a lot more carpet.

Couldn't fit a riser in the traditional way as no overlap at all. Could look at fitting riser on the outside of the top step down to the one underneath, but we would end up with really narrow steps. thr builders did say this is what they would be doing wish we had thought about the issues then!

  • Thanks but no overlap at all so sadly this won't work

The riser for each tread can be/is attached on the back face of the tread - nothing sits 'on top' of the tread - you don't lose any depth of the tread/'foot space'

We had a new staircase fitted when we had our extension done, we had terrible trouble with planning/building regs because the space for the staircase didn't give enough room for normal depth(not sure what word I'm looking for here, the space from the riser to the edge of the stair treads), in the end they allowed us to have a smaller going but by just a few millimetres. It was very few too.

For the purposes of this problem - extend the rear of the tread which would allow you to hit the underneath of the above tread with a riser?
