Village life - slooooow broadband

Moved 10 monthsago and the broadband speed is awful, I think 4 or 5Mb/s (hope that is right?)

I waswith Virgin at my old house and it was really fast, and would like the same again, Virgin do not supply our village, and I'm currently with John Lewis (it was on offer when I moved, now coming to end of contract)

A lad from work mentioned a fibre optic box/connection/junction box you can have fitted at a cost that speeds it up?

Any advice greatly appreciated

Think yourself lucky. I just tested mine so I could post this and my speeds are:
    Download 2.72 Mb/s
    Upload 0.30 Mb/s
  • Put your number and / or location into samknows and see what the options are. if FTTC is available (aka "fibre" which BT Internet call Infinity) then it will be capable of a lot higher throughput.

As a general point, if internet connectivity is important to you, always check before moving house!

  • Is this good or bad?

    • FTTC is available in your area

    Downstream Min: 0.4 Mbps
    Downstream Max: 1 Mbps
    Upstream Min: 0.8 Mbps
    Upstream Max: 1.2 Mbps

Many rural subscribers would be overjoyed to get 4-5MBps...that's more than fast enough for streaming TV.
If you've been used to VM fibre optic speeds, you'll notice the difference, obviously, so look at your FTTC options, if they exist.

That's positively fast for many too!

    Thanks everyone

I think he paid to have a fibre optic connection or connector fitted at the local telephone exchange, and said it improved his speed. I tried SamKnows website and entered my number and postcode and they it said BT Infinity at 38Kbps. Called them, and was told not available yet and to register interest.... So looks like I'm currently stuck with 6-7Mbps

Thanks all anyway, guess it a price I got to pay for living in a village

I live in the middle of nowhere, and my broadband speeds are similar to this.

It's just one of very few downsides to living in the countryside. I can go to my sister's home with my laptop if I need superfast speeds for any reason.

But live in close proximity to the great unwashed just for the sake of faster broadband - never!

  • Is there a community wireless broadband option ?

Quite a lot of rural locations have something like that (you see small odd looking aerials on people's houses).
