Chrome hangs and then PC goes into blue screen

From time to time my PC running Windows 7 Home Premium is unable to load sites using Chrome which hangs endlessly. Sometimes it picks up a connection again and sometimes I have to shut down (which sometime hangs in the process) to get it back to normal. And more recently this happens: Any guesses to what is causing it ?

PS uninstall avast and reboot before you proceed.

I am still getting hanging page loads on Chrome since uninstalling Avast. Will reboot and uninstall - reinstall Chrome
