From time to time my PC running Windows 7 Home Premium is unable to load sites using Chrome which hangs endlessly. Sometimes it picks up a connection again and sometimes I have to shut down (which sometime hangs in the process) to get it back to normal. And more recently this happens:

Any guesses to what is causing it ?

Seems to be a driver/hardware issue, but more than that I couldn't say.

I remember an old motherboard with a built-in hardware firewall that intermittently gave the DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error. I was able to get round that by disabling the firewall in the BIOS.

It might be worth checking the Device Manager for any signs of driver issues, and check that you have the most up-to-date drivers. Maybe check for BIOS updates too.
  • Also it's worth having a look in event viewer to give some clues.

Thanks. It has also been suggested I run mem test which I have installed onto a usb memory stick but I can't get it to work. When I bpot up the PC it still boots from the hard drive and not the memory stick. i thought the mem test software would take over if plugged into the usb.

Generally, BSOD means hardware. It might be a good idea to try reseating the memory/any cards/hard drive

Could also be your AV (anti virus) solution as they have drivers that hook into the kernel.

Does chrome have AV extensions/addons installed ?

Do you have trusteer rapport installed ?

That error is most commonly caused by faulty memory, corrupt page file (bad hard drive) or faulty drivers.

memtest should be the first thing you try, you may need to alter the boot order for it to boot from the usb, you can do this from the bios, many motherboards also have a key you can use to access the boot menu (f11 is common)

Try uninstalling the AV and use an alternative free AV such as Avira as a test in the troubleshooting process.

Alternatively if you wish to analyse the mini dumps and locate the culprit, see this tutorial:

Ok, here are the results of Who crashed.

    Error: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\fwpkclnt.sys
    product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
    company: Microsoft Corporation
    description: FWP/IPsec Kernel-Mode API
Bug check description: This indicates that a kernel-mode driver attempted to access pageable memory at a process IRQL that was too high.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system that cannot be identified at this time.
