If you wanted to stay in the south, the isle of wight is quite cheap and has lots of sea (and relatively sunny weather).
Not so good for medical care though.0 -

One point on that though being that I understand its rather expensive to travel to/from the mainland.0 -
Indeed why to limit yourself to Britain... You have to weigh up inconveniences of having to get used to other way of living versus not struggling financially that muchThe word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.0 -
Another thought there - ie re living abroad. The British "social wage" in effect has been cut and cut again - but we do still have the vestiges of a Welfare State (some sort of NHS still - if not what we are used to), etc, etc and this would need weighing up if moving abroad.
Also - moving abroad (ie outside Britain) means the need to learn their language and adapt.
Still grinning at a comment from a friends email this morning. She said that she has been reading comments from Americans about Britain and one of them said how it feels different according to which part of Britain one is in - England, Scotland, Wales or Cornwall and I knew what he meant. I'm told that the road signs in English and a second language have started going up in Cornwall (ie English and Cornish). So OP might find it "feels different" if she moves elsewhere in the country.
Even things like I know the way one dresses for a party or the like is smart casual or elegant basically - ie pretty plain (and don't bother with make-up at my age unless you want to personally) - but in the North of England I gather I'd be expected to do More and rev it up a lot of notches to what I've ever seen people dress like for a night out. So there are regional differences in different parts of Britain - but at least its optional as to whether to adapt.
Whereas living abroad - it is necessary to do so really.0 -

£100 for a round trip is not uncommon. Apparently it's one of the most expensive ferries per mile in the world. Thank god for business expenses is all i can say!0 -
Lincolshire is fairly cheap and has some lovely places. While there isn't a motorway the rail links are fairly good.0

Have you ever been to the North of England? If not, why not go and visit a few places. Plenty of rugged scenery and attractive towns in Northumberland, Yorkshire and Cumbria.0

It's a very economical time of year to go exploring. Many holiday rentals are cheap as chips in late season.0
