    Please don't......

Why not? This is why I need help - that one looked fine to me!

It appears the good HP one is now discontinued.

    How about this one?

    Excellent question.

Just saying "Please Don't......" isn't very informative, is it?

Thanks for those. The RAM and HDD are half the size of the HP one I was looking at. Does the processor outweigh that?

You can always add extra ram or change the HDD (or use external storage) at a later date but you can't change the CPU or graphics.

Besides most laptops that come with 8GB of ram have only a single stick of ram. If you have 2 x 4gb sticks these can be accessed simultaneously which double the memory bandwidth and improve integrated graphics performance by about 25% as an integrated GPU uses the same RAM as the CPU.

Which particular one were you looking at ?

Only over a same generation. There are plenty of older i7 processors still being sold that are poorer than a new i3.

That particular laptop came with a i5-4288U CPU (28w version) which had iris graphics which are generally only found on Macbooks, you won't find another laptop in that price bracket with those specs, you had yourself a bargain last time. It's quite annoying that there are virtually no Windows based laptops that don't come with Iris

Look at i5 based machines as listed above if your budget is around the £300 mark.

    Edit:

just found one with Iris graphics, bit more expensive though at £429

NB this also comes with a 1920x1080 pixels screen
