OMG, this is so complicated:eek:

Have just been sorting this out for my OH and it is really bizarre.

You have to basically fill an application form V10 to tax your vehicle, even though it is already taxed. Then you send it off with the V5C form, MOT, DWP award statement (all originals, not copies) and a cheque for the relevant fee.

After a couple of weeks we received firstly a brand new V5C, followed a couple of days later by the MOT and DWP award statement. We have to wait for up to six weeks for the refund of the original car tax.

Apparently this is the only way that the DVLA can deal with this as there are so many different rates of car tax and some people pay for 6 months and some for 12 months.

I telephoned them today to ask if the same thing applies next time (for us in 6 months) and they said yes, exactly the same procedure again - fill in forms, get issued with a new V5C etc etc.

Seems totally bonkers and must cost a fortune in administration and postage:(

Taken from another website but it seems the DVLA staff are not overly happy with the archaic system either:

It sounds like a case of the Government making a decision without first ensuring that the computer system was actually capable of carrying out the task!

I'm on my 3rd attempt of 50% reduction 12 moths road tax.

1st 'forgot' to sign the cheque
2nd sent this years pip statement
3rd sent my original 'entitlement' statement from 20013.

    3 guaranteed deliveries.

Thanks for answering what I was considering for next year, I'll need to re send all the docs and cheque again. Until recently I didn't know anyone accepted cheques these days;)

Yep, its a nightmare. My DS was bought a car by his grandparents and is entitled to a 50% reduction in car tax due to his PIP aware. Took us a good couple of weeks to get sorted, was a real hassle.

Have finally received the last thing from DVLA which was the refund of the original tax already paid on the vehicle.

My OH is looking to change the car shortly and so we will have to go through the whole fiasco again - what a nightmare. I do hope they can come up with something more straightforward, it is ridiculous.

I'll be applying for this concession for the first time in January and I'm always wary of sending any original documentation away, as they almost always never get returned.

Do they return your original PIP award letter?

ETA: My car tax is due in January but I'll be buying a new car in March, so what happens then? Does the dealer do all that for you? And do they need an original PIP letter too?

Yes you have to send all original documents - PIP award letter, V5, MOT, etc - and they do return them to you.

I paid to send it Special Delivery just to be sure and so I could track it.

My OH now needs to change his car and so we are going to have to go through the whole procedure again at any time. Surely they can come up with a better way?

You have to send the required docs and cheque-why I chose to send via guaranteed delivery(approx£5) -all doc were returned no probs.

    signed cheque
    original pip'entitlement' statement from 20013
    V5C form, MOT

  • I have read many complaints about the DVLA and sadly I am joining them, what a nightmare. I rung them because we are changing this week from DLA to PIP. The DLA is to be cancelled, so wanted to know does that mean the car tax is cancelled too and how do I apply under PIP. We are exactly the same car tax rate, that is no change, its just now under PIP entitlement instead of DLA. The helpline was no help, told me I had to pay 50% and was focused on getting my credit card details. PIP is 50% of car tax, at which point I said were on enhanced rate and its free. She then said if you know that why are you ringing me and if I have a problem with the PIP rates I need to ring them not the DVLA. But my question was do I need to re-register the car tax under the new PIP certificate - I never got an answer. So frustrating has anyone done this, do I need to do anything?
