Peugeot RCZ engine died - any consumer rights?

I purchased a used Peugeot RCZ back in December 2013 from a Peugeot Dealer, the engine died at the weekend.

I’m wondering what rights I have (if any) to claim some of the cost of the repair back as my local garage is estimating it could cost up to £3000 (he’s very trustworthy). The car is just under 4 years old (Nov 11) and has done just over 40,000 miles (of which I’ve only done 5000).

Any help or advice, especially if anyones dealt with a similar situation would be greatly appreciated.

    Also I’ve read about the Sales of Goods act and taking it up with the Peugeot dealer, but as I’ve owned the car over 6 months I believe it’s up to me to prove the fault was there since day one - but not sure how I could do this?

    You might get a goodwill gesture if you've serviced the backside off it but I personally think you're on your own.

    I'm sure someone will be along shortly to get your hopes up though

    "My engine died" is a little non-specific, what exactly is the fault? If the car has been serviced, according to it's schedule via the dealer network then you may get some help from them, especially given the age and mileage. Contact the local dealership and Peugeot customer services.

    Yes you have to prove that the fault is inherent if you want to take the SOGA route so knowing what is wrong may go some way to showing whether it's down to abnormal wear & tear or misuse or indeed a manufacturing issue.

    Yes, sorry for the non specific description, I'm a bit of a car technophobe. The garage are doing more tests, but it seems like cylinder 3 isn't working. They're doing a smoke test on it today to try and diagnose further.

    So, has it been serviced regularly by the Peugeot dealer network?

    TBH, you're not going to be able to do anything yet until you know exactly what the fault is and it's potential cause.

    It had it's services done before I bought it by the Peugeot dealer network - however I read on their website that a service should be done Every 2 years or 20,000 miles. I've only done 5000 and had it less than 2 years, so it was something I was going to get done towards the end of the year.

    You can't really expect Pug to pick up the bill if its currently with an independent. Btw, cylinders don't just stop working. I would get it to your nearest Pug deal and get them to look at it. Don't tell them about the indy!

    There's nothing wrong in getting an independent, evaluation done first. True if the OP wants to get a goodwill gesture from Peugeot then he will need to have them look at it themselves but no need to jump the gun until finds out exactly what the problem is.

    Yep, that's the plan - the indy garage it's at now is owned by a friend, who although will charge me for the time spent on it so far, he'll give me honest advice - even if that advice is not to use him to fix it going forward.

    Was really just wondering if I had any legal stance if it turns out to be the worst and it costs me £2000+ to fix.

    If you have not had it serviced since you bought it nearly two years ago, it will be near impossible to prove the fault being inherent.

    I think you could be relying totally on the good will of the dealer that sold it.
    Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
    Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
