GTX 680 2gb problems?

Options
Just bought a GTX 680 from a guy on ebay and installed the card today.

Seen that the card needs a 6 pin + a 8 pin connector

However my 850watt xanta power supply doesn't have 2 8 pins as the other is powering the Motherboard.

So I connected a 6 + 6+2 pin connector to power it that way. the card boots up to the motherboard boot logo and it has some distorted lines across the screen.

Once it gets to the log in screen the pc resets and the screen goes black.

Haven't been able to get passed this.

The card looks new as was sold like this but some stuff are missing from the box.

So could either be a faulty card or it wont work right with the 6+2 pin?

what do you guys think?

You'll probably need both the 6 and 8 pin connectors connected properly before the graphic card will even boot.

You can find plenty of "molex to 8 pin" adapters/convertors on eBay.

    This is my power supply

    Xenta 800W 13.5cm Fan PSU - 80plus Certified 6x SATA 6x PCI-E.

    Features:
Active PFC and 80plus Bronze Certified for increased efficiency
Large 13.5cm Cooling fan for quiet operation
All braided cables for case cable management
    High quality black paint finish
800W Continuous output, 900W Maximum output
    Cable Connectors: 20+4pin Power, 4+4pin ATX12v, 6x SATA, 6x PCI-Express (4x 6pin, 2x 6+2pin), 6x Molex, 2x Floppy

I can't see why it wouldn't work but I could try a 6+8 pin adapter see if it would work

also, you may need to tell the pc in the BIOS to use the card.....

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

6+2 is an 8pin connector. 6+2 means it can be used as a 6 or an 8pin connector. But its the PCI express connectors you need to use.

Make sure everything is plugged in properly. Take the card out completely and re-insert it to see if it makes a difference.

Its also possible the PSU isn't delivering enough power down the 12v rail
  • Did you uninstall the previous GPU drivers before installing the new card?

Device Driver Uninstaller is the best tool to do this, but if you haven't then I'd put the old card back in to let you boot into Windows and install DDU and download the latest drivers for your new card.

The process you need to follow in DDU is to click the button to reboot into safe mode for it to completely uninstall the old drivers then shut down the PC completely. Then you should replace the cards and boot up.

Make sure you don't have your PC set to automaticay restart if there's an error. You want a Blue Screen as it contains error codes that help in tracing issues with hardware/software. This guide will show you how to check it.

What's missing from the package? If it's new it should be sealed and everything listed in the contents be there, if it's not then you need to challenge the seller about this..

A 6+2 connector will do the job, there is no specific PCIe connector.

The most likely issue here I think.

Is the card branded? I've heard there have been a few fake GPU cards flying around on ebay 'from china' recently...

The other case I came across recently involved a 'Vamery' branded GTX 680

    See:
    http://www.overclock.net/t/1460019/warning-fake-gtx-680s
    and
    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1960189/gtx-680.html

and other things google throws up for 'fake GTX 680'

(basically a low powered GPU someone has been flashing to identify to the PC it's a GTX 680 but is essentially a low powered empty shell of a GPU)

That is the card a bought. I removed the drivers for the card and installed the new ones only this time i see the same distorted image on the boot logo then the blue windows 10 logo then the monitor goes into standby.

Replacing my power supply for a different one is a lot of money just to try out on the off chance it might work though? How do i find out if the psu is using the right 12v rail as tried all the adaptors on the card.

I'll post some pics as their are some scratch marks on the back of the card that I'm not sure could be a cause as well

Perhaps you could get a local PC shop to test it for you, might do it for about a £10 if you ask nicely and plead poverty, cheaper than shelling out for a new PSU then find out you have a duff card.

    edit

I noted you paid £113 for a second hand card that's only marginally faster than the much lower wattage (195w vs 90w) full dx12 GTX950 which can be had new for only £14 more:

It's good bang for the cash:

Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.
  • I have a asus h81 board here that will accept some cards and not other similar ones , , faulty motherboard perhaps?

as fightsback says , ask a local shop to test the card for you ,
