Why have you avoided answering the question
" Why was I not asked for an explanation of my actions "

    And replied
" You would not have been asked for an explanation on the shop floor. "

It's very weird you have avoided answering that? ;)

Because it's company policy to call a manager to the office isn't it?

But then you get someone like me pretending to be a 'new' customer every Thursday to get £20 off their shopping. Is that worse then the OP's offence?

I would say your offence is worse (although neither are illegal).

The OP made a mistake which they say was an honest mistake. You on the otherhand are deliberately changing details to exploit a £20 discount that should only be for new customers.

Are you using different cards, emails, names every time?

    It seems deceitful behaviour

I must say your post here is simply stupid.

A: He can make a citizens arrest as can anyone which will be what happened but the OP glossed over this point.

B: Stealing is a crime and there is no justification for it whatsoever and your comment above is about as daft as they come.

In summery here I believe you would be better off posting on a forum dedicated to people of an average age of 5 as they may listen to you more than people here would.

He is operating under a commercial capacity when working for a private company. This is a civil matter, or at most a suspected offense. Did he have a right to call the police? Yes, but there was no need for him to march him to the back room like a criminal, when he hadn't been found guilty of any crime. This sounds like an age old under educated buffoon over-stepping his authority.

Regarding the hungry stealing sandwiches, this is a typical occurrence in a nearby ASDA. I'm sure you'll know someone who works in a supermarket given that most supermarkets are now the main employer in any town throughout the UK. Ask them. I am forever hearing how the bulk of 'thefts' are 'food'.

There's a reason the co-op is short for the cooperative. It actually reduces it's sell by date food at a bargain. 9p for broccoli, 24p for a pack of x4 Muller yoghurts. ASDA's definition of 'reduced' is knocking 10p - 20p off a £4 item.

Greed deserves to be met with appropriation

I think they didn't say the bulk of thefts are food ie a sandwich for the hungry they probably said most bulk thefts are food eg ten packets of rump steam- six bottles of whisky etc
However the op hasn't mentioned sandwiches at all..

One of those unsympathetic types who couldn't care less about those worse off than himself are we?

I have never stole in my life, and totally object to anyone stealing from another person (home burglaries being a prime example) but in the case of a giant supermarket chain. I couldn't care less about people stealing from it.

People have short term memories and forget the unjust growth and dominance of the supermarket, and how when the growth developed over 15 years ago, a lot of local businesses, some, which were family run were put out of business. clothing shops, tool shops, music shops, you name it. Lets not forget council's giving preference to these supermarkets over any other to get them into the town under the poor excuse of "Town allure & development". What about the public subsidies they receive? What about the tax levy's that allow them greater spending capabilities to then muscle more local businesses out? Is it fair? Of course not.

As I've said before, appropriation is well deserved

Im not avoiding answering any question- I dont even recall being asked a question!!!

" Why was I not asked for an explanation of my actions "

    And replied
" You would not have been asked for an explanation on the shop floor. "

It's very weird you have avoided answering that? ;)????????

I took it to mean that the OP was not asked for an explanation at the time he was stopped which would obviously be outside or on the shop floor. Clearly he was asked for an explanation later as he has gone into much detail about the conversation

Because it's company policy to call a manager to the office isn't it?

In answer to that question! I wouldnt know!

It confuses me as well how the poster seems to think everyone knows what Tesco's company policy is on shop lifters!

    Yet you say this "
    "
When you are stopped on suspicion of shoplifting at Tesco it is not just one person who has watched you and suspected you. There are multiple cameras and operators who liaise with each other the moment you look suspicious and watch you throughout your visit. Many shoplifters pick up an item and then lose their bottle and put the item down somewhere else so thy watch you to ensure the items you have picked up are not put down again before you leave the store."

As though you are speaking about something you are familiar with/ knowledgeable about ..

And also how do you know " most shoplifters have more than enough money to pay for the goods" because a very large quantity of shoplifters are hard drug users aren't they?

It's a very well known rule in many big stores.
