I've just entered mine too, I have been given this message for that gas though.

Which begs the question of what the point was of asking for it if they aren't going to use it. And also how on earth they can use it to make the first bill accurate if they aren't using it as the opening reading.

    Morning Shrimply,

It sounds like the read you've provided doesn't fall in line, or match previous reads (hard to say really without seeing the account)

But it means your accurate read will be used to base the start read on.

Let me know if you need me though, always happy to check for you.

The piece of the 'jigsaw' that the E.oN rep hasn't mentioned is that the opening readings that you provide are NOT accepted at face value - they go through a third party review process. Three things can then happen:

    1. The meter readings are in line with past consumption and are accepted as the opening and closing readings.

    2. The third party looks at the readings and makes an industry adjustment. The adjusted readings are then passed to both suppliers as opening and closing readings.

    3. Both suppliers look at the readings. In certain circumstances, a dispute can be raised.

In sum, what I think E.oN is trying to tell you is that your meter readings you provided may not appear on your first bill as the opening readings.

    Thank Hengus and Helena,

I realise the process, I just find it frustrating that actual customer reads are over ruled by industry standards etc which don't seem to have any relation to individual customers.

The gas reading is correct, it's the same one I entered last month to my previous supplier, but that's because I've used practically no gas. In fact the meter hasn't reached the reading I submitted yet because I always round it up.

Just seems daft, if the agreed reading is a unit or so out then it really makes no difference to me. However, it just adds an extra element of worry that they are going to decide that the gas reading is actually far higher than it should be and as a result I end up paying more for it.

My guess is that it is down to the fact that customers have been known to lie - particularly, when energy prices are rising (remember the 8% increases per year). I'll just add a 1000kWhs off the reading as no one will notice.:D

You are probably right, and I guess it would be hard to implement. But if there was a problem with the opening reads it would be nice to get an email saying this and explaining what would happen regarding estimating the opening reads. And saying that if you were unhappy about this, and sure the readings you gave were correct to send photographic evidence as proof and allowing the actual readings to be used.

That would probably require too much manual work for the companies though I guess... I can dream :rotfl:

...nail on the head time!! - I had a similar problem with a switch about 5 years ago, when a meter reader had been literally a couple of days before the switch and had obviously rounded up - I wasn't aware and rounded down for the switch!
Took several months before the opening reading could be agreed between the two utility suppliers at the time -even tho' the difference was less than £1 in cash terms:rotfl::rotfl:

Don't worry about this. I am in the process of switching to Eon and tried to input my opening readings in my case the gas was accepted but I got the same message as you but for my electric.

It stayed like that for about 2 weeks when logging in and going to meter reads the gas was shown but still no electric.

I telephoned them yesterday they confirmed they had the meter readings needed and explained about the"third party" involvement. They said it should be sorted shortly. However when checking again yesterday afternoon, the opening read for electric is now showing!

Was this a coincidence and the third party had ageed the figure OR had Eon forgotten to input my reading and did it after my call I will never know ,but at least I have moved forward.

If your reads do not show up you might try and call them.

Well now, with my supply from Eon starting today, I'm extra confused about the meter reading situation.

As previously mentioned it told me my opening gas reading could not be used. On the electricity tab it said that I had already provided opening reads and could not enter another... fair enough.

However, today when I log in it's telling me I still need to provide opening reads, and while the gas reading I entered is still present, and I can't enter another read, it seems there is no evidence of the electricity reading at all.

    Morning Shrimply,

It sounds like the account may be in what we call 'registration confirmed' this means although we do supply, we're just waiting for some further information to be uploaded on to the system.

This means that you can't see much on the online account and you won't be able to see all the readings etc.

Would you like me to have a look?

I can check the account and email from there, if you would, please send me your account number, name and full address to the email address in my profile page :)

Ooo and the start reads would be fab, if you can give me those please.

Thanks, that's interesting, and would explain why my previous provider has used a higher reading on their final bill than the opening reading I provided to E.On. Let's hope E.On make the same adjustment.

It does feel a bit like I've been accused of giving false readings though!
