We're not all on the same moral compass level unfortunately. Take that however u want. If I don't spend the money don't let them know and wait for them to discover it themselves what happens?

They'll either discover it some way down the line and you'll have to pay it back or they won't and you'll get away with the money. Presumably after a certain point they wouldn't be able to pursue you for it. I don't know how long that would be, but I'd think at least six months. Maybe years.

In reality they'll almost certainly realise. Something will be a few hundred quid down and another thing a few hundred quid up. Money doesn't get "lost" that easily.

Two things, for what they're worth. You come across as rather aggressive, and I would let them know about the money.
  • I've ran away with 5000 pounds of debt before which is all statute barred now u can check my old posts to confirm that. I'm not gonna go just phoning them straight away without knowing exactly where I stand and what I can do. I don't know what has happened to this site but instead of throwing stupid !!! lame comments around like a bunch of trolling morons maybe u should try to be a bit more helpful and understand of people's situations. A couple of u were helpful.

I'm trying to get debt free at the moment so won't be spending the money however I'm not going to tell them there's been a mistake till they discover it themselves. I think that'll be the best course of action.

I've been a customer for a long time so it will help me cut the debt down by the time they discover it. In fact all I'm going to do is make minimum payments till my my buy now pay later is due.

If you're not going to spend it (which would be stupid), why not tell them now about the mistake?

How will keeping it cut the debt down?

    It's not theft.

It is. Just because you didn't wear a balaclava and stick it in a swag bag is irrelevant. Why not read the relevant parts of the Theft Act that I've quoted for you a few posts up, or explain to us why you believe that it isn't theft?
  • I'm not aggressive in the slightest. I'm not going to tell them let them discover it themselves and not spend the money. If u read some of the comments then it's understandable to be aggressive when other people are calling u names.
  • I'm not planning to permenantly deprive them of it?
  • This would have made a nice answer.

Don't write anybody any letters. You've got their money (they don't owe you any money). Just wait for them to make the next move.

It's not that I'm advocating keeping money that doesn't belong to you, it's just the reality of dealing with large companies where, more often than not, the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing.

If you contact them, here is what is likely to happen: Some customer service rep is going to initiate a manual charge to your credit card. Then somewhere three thousand miles away, somebody is going to run the quarterly account audit program and find that they gave you a double credit and initiate another charge to your credit card. Then you are back to where they owe you money and you have to spend hours on the phone trying to convince someone that a significantly more complicated series of events requires them to send you some money back.

Let it be. If they contact you asking for their money back, send it to them. Letting the wheels of their internal bureaucracy churn at their own rate is going to be the simplest thing for everyone involved and the most likely path to a correct resolution.

Of course, check your account for strange activity monthly. You should be doing this with all of your credit cards anyway. There are so many people who post messages on other boards that say stuff like "I have a credit card I never used, so I never bothered to look at my monthly statements. Now I get a call from a collection agency saying I owe them $500! They say my statement from twelve months ago had a notice about an annual fee and they've been adding interest and late payment fees every month. What should I do?"
  • There's gotta be something more to this u c I haven't got the money it's a finance thing so the money is there's they've just taken it off my balance which j owed them. I can spend the money but only with the catalogue. Some of u I think seem to be thinking they've put 500 quid in my bank account.

That's not really what the evidence suggests when you're making absolutely no attempt whatsoever to return it to its rightful owner or to even notify them that you have it. But hey, it's basically free money, so let's all just forget about them pesky laws n' stuff.

I wonder where your moral compass would be pointing if the error had been made by a single mother who accidentally sent her last £500 to your bank account instead of to her landlord?

Funny how we convince ourselves that it's OK when it's a large corporation that we're ripping off...

The effect is the same. Either way you will end up with £500 of 'stuff' that doesn't belong to you, and that stuff could easily be resold for cash.
