Actually, yes I do let companies know if a mistake has been made. I've been sent the same order twice by a couple of companies and my first reaction is not how can I get to keep this. My first reaction is to contact the company and let them know they've made an error.
If I get given too much change in a store, I let the cashier know.
It's one thing to save money, it's another to try to cover up a mistake that could be to your benefit.
I'm damn sure if they'd billed you twice you'd be straight on the phone to them demanding they sort it out.0 -
Ok I understand it's not legally mine and I will have to pay it back if I spend it. However what if I just don't tell them there's been a mistake. Don't spend the money and wait for them to discover it themselves. Is that illegal?0

Well, it seems you want laws, so here's one.Basic definition of theft.
(1)A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it; and “thief” and “steal” shall be construed accordingly.
"Appropriates”.
(1)Any assumption by a person of the rights of an owner amounts to an appropriation, and this includes, where he has come by the property (innocently or not) without stealing it, any later assumption of a right to it by keeping or dealing with it as owner.

We're not all on the same moral compass level unfortunately. Take that however u want. If I don't spend the money don't let them know and wait for them to discover it themselves what happens?0

Best case scenario? Nothing.
Worst case scenario? You get arrested and prosecuted for the criminal offence of theft, and the catalogue company take you to court to get their money back.0 -
I see moneysaving expert has become some sort of playground for trolls. Is it illegal to let them find out the mistake for themselves?0
-
Yes. It's theft to treat the money as if it is your own when you know that it is not.0

I'm trying to get debt free at the moment so won't be spending the money however I'm not going to tell them there's been a mistake till they discover it themselves. I think that'll be the best course of action. I've been a customer for a long time so it will help me cut the debt down by the time they discover it. In fact all I'm going to do is make minimum payments till my my buy now pay later is due. Not log in till then again. I'll say something along the lines of I didn't know because I was just logging in to check my minimum payments. It'll go smooth. Sorry if it doesn't morally agree with u but I'm not as educated and we'll off as some of u so therefore can't just do what's morally right all the time.0
