Cod Liver Oil for older dog

Hi all, we adopted our dog from the local dogs home last september and things have been fine, she is a lovely calm, well behaved staffie. She has eczema on her feet which is treated with prednicare(steroid tabs) and piriton as vet thinks it may be allergy related. We also have to soak her feet every now and again in the bath with medicated/anti fungal bubble bath stuff.

She is getting on a bit, our vet told us last year that going on her teeth she is prob about eight years old, I personally think she may be older. Her face is covered in grey and white hairs. Lately, she seems to be having trouble with her back legs and it takes her a couple of attempts to jump onto my lap. I've bought a bottle of cod liver oil as I've heard that this is good to give dogs for their joints. Does anyone else give this to their pets, if so how much do you give?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Em

I have had great results with glucosamine for dogs, for my dogs arthritis.

  • Arthritis is an inflammatory condition so anti inflammatory agents such as Glucosamine and Cod liver oil (which contains omega 3 and Vitamin d3) will help.

Thats brilliant, . Will definately look into glucosamine - what does it do? where can I get it from?. I don't know that much about it so will have a read up. For now I will give her 1/2 tspn of CLO for the time being. (thanks for the link)!!:j

My old girl is on Cortaflex for her glucosamine. I get it from the vet and its quite pricey but I have found it pretty good for both the dogs and my horse. You could probably get it cheaper on one of the on-line vet supply sites.

I give cod liver oil too for dry skin (and cos they love it!).

Likewise my ole gal is getting on 2. I buy her CLO from savers its about £5 for 365 capsules and she has 1 a day in her food.
Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach that person to
use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.:D
  • My vet advised 1/2 a teaspoon for my beagle a few years back, seemed to help. But you never know if its a placebo effect or anything but what the heck, CLO isnt expensive!
  • You can just give regular gluscosamine and chrondroitin from the health food shop/pharmacy for arthritis as well as human type cod liver oil however please be very very careful about the quantity of CLO you give as too much can cause toxicity (I think it's vitamin A toxicity). A better source of EPA would be salmon oil which is what I give to my dog. My vet also recommends evening primrose oil for the coat too (again the regular human kind).
