Amazon - email confirming an order I did not make

This morning I had an email from Amazon notifying dispatch of an order that I did not make.

The email was from Amazon and has my correct address etc. I rang my linked CC - nothing had come through to them. I checked my Amazon account online - the order was not showing on my account.

So I contacted Amazon support via their chat. Gave the guy my email and home address and he found the phantom order straight away and said he would cancel it. A few minutes later I got a cancellation email.

But the order still does not show on my Amazon account - not even as a cancelled order.

Anyone had a similar experience?

EDIT: Darn, the transaction has appeared on my CC, four days on from this OP.

    Someone has made a mistake when giving Amazon their email address and they have given yours instead - maybe a simple misspelling.

    You are unlikely to ever find the answer - due to data protection legislation.
  • Just a thought...Have you entered any competitions lately? Could have been a dispatch notice for something you've won - did it say what it was in the email? Might give a better idea....
  • I have not had any for a while but get these regularly, they are scam emails, not sure how they gain from it but probably a link it there somewere. usually in US$....I just ignore them or as you did check my account...


    If it were a competition prize order, you would not get the despatch note, the sender would just like you would if you purchased something.

    No, haven't entered any competitions.

    It was in pounds not dollars. Likewise, we can't see how anyone could benefit from this - the delivery address was our address. The email definitely came from Amazon.

    Amazon say they are investigating and will get back to us. I will post if we get an explanation.

    Could they track when whatever it is is being delivered. As soon as it is reported as delivered you get a phone call saying "awfully sorry, goods have been delivered to you by mistake, can we send courier to collect from you?"

    There was a scam, like this , publicised a few years back. People were lurking near homes, then supposedly popping out to collect 'their' parcel. It involved mobile phone distributers.

    Possibly. However, the goods in question were furniture, value under £200 so not worth scamming I wouldn't have thought. If it had been a £1000 camera, ah yes.

    spam emails can be easy to spot just with those two questions, usually in my spam and addressed to dear customer and bad spelling

    OP please tell me you logged into Amazon separately from the email?

    I hope for your sake you did not click on a link within the email to log onto Amazon. If you did this is a common way to hack into yout Amazon account as they create a fake looking Amazon website and then gain your username and password

    Email was not spam and was exactly the same as previous emails from Amazon for things we have ordered in the past. We also know it was from Amazon because when I contacted them they found the order, cancelled it and I got an order cancellation email. Why the order did not and does not appear in my Amazon account is still an unanswered question. There is no evidence that the order was actually made via my Amazon account - there's nothing to suggest the account has been hacked.

    Guessing, but it is as if some other Amazon customer made a legitimate order for some furniture, but a glitch ended up with the order having my email address and home address. It certainly feels more like a cockup than anything else at the moment.

    I never click on links in emails - wise to that one.
