Amazon - email confirming an order I did not make

Email was not spam and was exactly the same as previous emails from Amazon for things we have ordered in the past. We also know it was from Amazon because when I contacted them they found the order, cancelled it and I got an order cancellation email. Why the order did not and does not appear in my Amazon account is still an unanswered question. There is no evidence that the order was actually made via my Amazon account - there's nothing to suggest the account has been hacked.

Guessing, but it is as if some other Amazon customer made a legitimate order for some furniture, but a glitch ended up with the order having my email address and home address. It certainly feels more like a cockup than anything else at the moment.

I never click on links in emails - wise to that one.

It must be that someone has put in your email address when creating an account.

The only way you would get that email directly from Amazon is from an order being placed on an account associated with that email address.

With the order not showing up on your account the only other option is that someone has made a mistake and created an account with that email address.

OK, but if someone created an account with my email address, wouldn't I have had an email when the account was created?

Whatever the outcome worth changing the password on your Amazon account.

No, Amazon don't sent an email verification for an account being newly created.

You will also find that people open multiple accounts under their own email address, when they sign in rather than logging in they select new account - can lead to much confusion when none of their orders are showing!

Could be a test order placed by amazons IT department. They will use real customers as test data and "should" stop emails from being triggered during testing. May have been a mistake here!

That would explain why you couldn't see any orders in your account as they would be on a different database to the one you see when you login.

Yup, changed password, then Amazon said change it again, but then account got blocked because password changed twice within half an hour! Now unblocked.

Interesting, thank you. I only have one account.

JReacher - ah, test by IT dept. Didn't think of that one. Could be.
  • A man just turned up on our doorstep to deliver the furniture!!!

The thing we never ordered, the phantom order Amazon confirmed to us by email had been cancelled.

I explained to the delivery man what had happened and he took the big box away.
  • I had an email from Amazon this morning. Stating I had left something in my basket. On checking I had not.

How can someone else have used your email address? Surely they'd have had to know your password to log on as you? Has payment been taken from your payment method?

That's what's so weird. The order never appeared in my account, it's not even showing as a cancelled order. Initially, when I checked with my CC they said payment had not been take.

HOWEVER, after they tried to deliver today, I just checked my CC again and the transaction is there, but in Pending status. I will contact Amazon again.
