Vacuum cleaner for hardwood floors + carpets?

I'm afraid, not just Daily Mail readers - there are many such reports from August 2014.

They would be doing the world a favour if they banned all Vaxes. :T
It should be illegal to sell stuff like the Vax Power 8 pet; complete crap.Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0 -
As a side note, I must admit I've seen Henry's being used all over the place; hotels, gyms, University classrooms etc.
Is that because they are so good, or just cheap.............or both?Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0 -
They are good and long lasting. I don't think they're cheap. They're the right price for a good vacuum. I wouldn't pay £2-300 for a vacuum cleaner. I think its too much.As a side note, I must admit I've seen Henry's being used all over the place; hotels, gyms, University classrooms etc.

I've got a Henry. I like the very long lead with very simple rewind and the large 9 litre dust bag. Genuine bags are cheap. Its bigger than some others no needs a wider space to store it and it can smell which is possibly due to the large bags which aren't replaced very often as they take a long time to fill. Carbon filters are available which should stop the smell. Meilies are good but are expensive in comparison and after using a Henry the short cable is annoying. Replacement bags per litre are also possibly more expensive. Both have their fans but for different reasons.0 -
Thanks for everyone's input so far.
I'm trying to 2nd guess things here, but I have a feeling that when I'm not around the other users would have more trouble changing a vacuum bag than emptying a cylinder. So bagless might be the way to go - which I think would discount Miele and probably Henry (unless there's a bagless variety).
Though I keep reading Dysons don't last so long.... so it's a tough choice.Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0 -
Just a suggestion, have you looked at websites similar to ao.com or coopelectricals? Also the larger retail chains.
You will find a good selection, should be able to compare prices between stores and also some reviews.
I have used coopelectricals a couple of times now and the delivery service was second to none. 1 hour slots and a call just prior to delivery.
One thing to take into account would be the cost of an extended warranty if you want one, - some stores rip you off big time for this.

Hi Infadel
I'm not going to say anything against the others, but please consider this. Miele actually don't make a profit from their vacuum cleaners, they pretty much treat them as a 'loss leader'! The reason for this is quite simple: A consumer purchases a Miele vacuum cleaner, is really impressed with it as it will always be far better than their old cleaner or any other cleaner they've tried. So when the customer's washing machine or dishwasher needs replacing then they are more than likely to replace it with a a Miele!
With regard to the Miele bags, I think they are easier to remove and fit a new one than emptying and cleaning a bagless cleaner's cylinder. And if you order the machine direct from the Miele website you will get delivery the next day.

I've used Miele vacuums. They are not "far better" than other vacuums i've tried. Highly unlikely Miele treat their vacuums as loss leaders.. Have you got shares in Miele?.CKdesigner wrote: »Hi Infadel

I own a Miele vacuum ("Cat and dog" model). It is very good. I don't used on the wood floors though, I brush those (and I certainly don't attack them with a steam mop either, since those were mentioned in another topic, a simple two minute sweep once a month is enough for engineered oak).
At work we have a Henry, this is also very good. I can't compare the two as they are used in different environments on different carpets.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
Had our Henry 2 years and only on the second bag. The bags really hold a lot, and are very easy to change. Thanks for everyone's input so far.

Not a very smart consumer then.CKdesigner wrote: »A consumer purchases a Miele vacuum cleaner, is really impressed with it as it will always be far better than their old cleaner or any other cleaner they've tried. I would treat each product individually and research it as such. Just because a product is good doesn't mean people should blindly buy all products from the same manufacturer!0
