Regarding oil consumption of prius, google it, they are planning a class action against Toyota in the States.
The class action doesn't mention the Prius.

Hi all, if anyone is interested...
Our "stop gap" car (2006 Peugeot 207 diesel 70k miles) which we were hoping to keep for a couple of years to save up for a new car had a fault that neither the local independent garage or the Peugeot garage could fix so £500 of diagnostics later we threw in the towel and bought a 2013 Toyota Auris Hybrid. Ultimately we couldn't face getting another diesel after two diesels in a row (albeit both old) were going wrong regularly doing OH's 52-mile round trip commute often chock-a-block with traffic.
I will keep you informed on how costs are looking (assuming it's helpful!). So far we are (just) beating the MPG achieved on the Peugeot (58 vs 55) which is I think is good enough. Still learning how to make the most of it of course. It's a lovely car inside. The Peugeot was very cheap-looking and flimsy plus a rough ride.
Over the last 8 months in the Peugeot we had spent an average of £104.74 / month on diesel. Obviously fuel prices are volatile so not the best to go on - instead based on 15000 miles which is pretty accurate and 55 MPG which was a long-run average we'll call it 22.73 gallons / month.
Other costs that we'll be saving - VED for the Auris is 0. We were previously spending £110 / year on the Peugeot. Also car repairs - we spent £592.19 on car repairs over 8 months for the Peugeot and that's not including the MOT and service cost, but on incidental repairs. That's £74 / month. The Which? report for the previous model of the Auris (not enough data for 2013 model) suggests an average of £60/year for repairs ie. £5 / month so I expect a saving of £70 / month (that would be nice!!).
Costs that are going up... depreciation. But the previous car had become uneconomical so I imagine depreciation would've been around equal whether we'd bought the Auris or a diesel of a similar age and spec?
Finally our motoring future is looking a little brighter!Cleared my credit card debt of £7123.58 in a year using YNAB! Debt free date 04/12/2015.
Enjoying sending hundreds of pounds a month to savings rather than debt repayment!0
