If they have to do a recall to fix the software in such a way that performance tanks, it might have a significant effect on resale values...

That'll not happen. Also, i cant see anyone being "forced" to accept the recall.

TBH that and "if you dont do a recall your car could fail its MOT" are both scaremongering and there is no basis for thinking it will happen.
  • I suspect that will be exactly what will happen. How else could they enforce standards?

Hold on for that cheap Audi. Wir leben Autos, ja?

I would say VW will end up paying a massive fine to the respective governments and issue a recall notice to all affected cars to remove the S/W.

You seriously cant orchestrate an MOT test across multiple countries to identify cars that "might" be affected and then enforce with the driver that they've had the s/w removed otherwise you put their car off the road, bearing in mind they dont do emissions tests on diesels here anyway?

Complete nonsense and scaremongering to think or suggest that.

Damn the global warming fantasists and their fixation on "emissions"!

    .
Except it's more a public health issue (forget AGW).
    NOX emissions and smog.

If the govt (or EU) decide it's significant, they will spank VW (and probably the car owners will just be collateral damage).
  • It doesn't have to be multiple countries. They can all make their own rules up.(Like with the migrants.)
    Where's the scaremongering?

It really depends on how far it extends. Are petrol engines involved? I'm wondering why the other manufacturers aren't loudly proclaiming that they would never dream of behaving as deceitfully as vw. Maybe we'll hear more of interest?

I would say most manufacturers are at it. It'll end up with a massive fine and a s/w update.

    Will watch with interest.
  • Apparently when Wolfsburg and the vw factory were occupied by Britain, the government offered the beetle to Lord rootes who made hillman etc. He turned it down, then went bust trying to compete with the beetle with his notoriously unreliable hillman imp.
