Whatsapp

My daughter has installed WhatsApp on my phone.

I cannot see the point of this. She has made a group of herself, me and our son. I would have no use of any other groups, plus if I wanted to email D&S or text them both I can do this in seconds.

I have now discovered there is a cost to WhatsApp but need an idiots guide on this. Some people talk of yearly subscriptions whereas others say it comes off your phone bill or internet bill.

I am none the wiser, can someone help me?

  • Whatsapp should be free and you don't need a yearly subscription. If you do have to pay for it then it might be just one off payment of 69p or something! It uses your internet though so just make sure you have enough 3g usage on your phone so you aren't getting charged extra for your internet usage!
  • It's under £1 a year for a subscription and it's not an auto renewal. They will tell you when your subscription is up and ask if you want to pay again. They did use to give you the first year free.

It does send information, messages, calls, files, over the internet. So will cost you if you use it when connected to mobile data if you do not have this included in your contract, but not when used over wifi.

It is ideal from group conversations, like with your daughter and son. You only have to send one message and they can both read it etc.

It's also good for sending pictures rather than paying to do so via multimedia messages.

I mainly use it when I'm visiting friends in rural areas with a dodgy mobile signal, I can connect to their wifi and keep in touch with people.

For me it's more than worth the small cost, if for no other reason than the vast majority of my contacts also use it.

I have Whatsapp. I have paid the yearly subscription which is 69p because i think its worth it.

I chat to my daughter in South Africa regularly using it.

I also have several group chats.

Family. This includes myself, my eldest daughter, my youngest daughter and my youngest son. We chat about our day. Including pictures.

Home. This includes myself, my husband (when he's at home) and my youngest son.... It consists of messages like, "who wants what for tea?" or "Who is in for tea?". It gets sent to the two of them and they reply.

Then theres Nans group. This consists of me, my youngest daughter and my son in law. I usually send them pictures of their son when i have him overnight or on the days i have him whilst they are both at work.

The beauty of Whatsapp is you can tell when a message has been read and i suspect, if you are blocked.

Hubby prefers Telegram... which is another messaging network.

I pay 99p or similar a year and use Whatsapp instead of paying for texts .
  • Whatsapp IMO is one of the best apps out there.
  • Whatsapp and other free messaging services have all but seen the end of text messages, and are in no way comparable to an email.

In my block of flats, every resident is in a Whatsapp group - through this we can report raise any tenant issues, report damage to the property etc - instant message delivery to 40+ residents and we can see who has read it.
...and the Spurs go marching on.
  • I don't pay anything for whatsapp it's free on the iphone!

i use VIBER its totally free
  • My family all have it for free, it useful for sending pics and having group chats as the group is already set up. If anyone has a limited number of texts in their deal, using whatsapp stops them eating into that.
And I find it very useful abroad, as long as I use it over wifi, its free.
  • Thank you for your replies.

I can see why it useful for certain people such as Matthieus23 and keeping in touch with others in the flats.

I can also see why Judi would use it for South Africa as it is free, not quite sure why you would need to keep in contact every day with the rest of the family though, we don't necessarily do that.

Thank for all pointing out the fee is very small so it's not going to drain the bank account. However, I still feel it is not necessary for me.

    Thanks again.
