Where did you get this from? Have you any evidence of a supplier charging someone who declines a smart meter.

If this had happened I am sure it would have made news headlines.
  • So, Im right in thinking that I dont have to book a day off to accept the fitting of the Smart meter (Npower). I could rearrange for another day that suits me but its still has to be between Mon and Fri, so its still a days holiday as they can fit anytime between 12 & 6 and it can take 2 hours!

Not that fussed about having one anyway but wanted to clarify that I definatley do not have to have one!

You are correct that you don't have to have to book a day off to accept the fitting of a smart meter. However it may be that they (Npower) have decided your meter needs replacing because of it's age in which case if you decline a smart meter (as you can) they may still need to swap it, but just for a normal meter rather than a smart. You would need to speak to them to ask the reason they want to replace it, assuming the letter has not already told you anyway.

When I got a similar letter from First Utility requesting me to ring their agent Siemens (on a non-free number) to make an appointment for them to install a smart meter, I got put on hold listening to some recording about how wonderful Siemens were. I decided if they wanted to install a meter they should call me (at their expense) rather than expect me to wait on the phone for as long as they might choose to make an appointment for something they wanted and I didn't request . So I didn't do anything else and never heard anything more about it (and I'm no longer with First Utility).

Don t you think its reasonable, that those who opt out, who cost more by their actions, should pay the extra costs and not be subsidised by the majority? .Thats already happened with subsidies for prepayment meters to lower the costs to standard tariffs. They cost the earth to run with all the people messing them up and now the extra costs of running these meters its passed on to us who pay their bills correctly with a credit meter.
My info about future costs on refuseniks originally came from a senior BG RPU man, but its also here at www.parliament.uk/publications and records/section 7 paragraph 109 "we agree with Ofgem that it is reasonable, once roll-out is complete,to charge consumers who opt out of having a smart meter "
We usually follow eventually what the Yanks do and they levy charges for refusers.California charge $10 a month with a one off payment of $75 for all the awkward b*****s. Florida also charge.
I ve seen a publication in Northern Ireland, where they are well ahead of us on smart meters, where a poll of people who would like to have time of use variable charges and over 70% voted yes.
